Welcome to Planit and the world of internal communications planning at BP

What is Planit? Planit is BP’s chosen internal communications planning application Planit was developed externally by a trusted communications consultancy and expanded and enhanced for group-wide use in BP through the efforts of a select group of committed pilot users. Planit has the endorsement and backing of BP’s internal communications leaders network (ICLN) and is available, online, to all staff working in internal communications and engagement roles across the group.

Planning tool rationale To support the group’s drive for greater simplicity and efficiency To help build the reputation of internal communications as a well organised and professional discipline in BP

Twin purpose of the planning tool Promote a consistent, meaningful approach to the discipline of internal communications planning across the group Facilitate an internal communications ‘traffic management’ capability that will deliver improved effectiveness of our portfolio of internal communication activities

Why use Planit? A simple, methodical process that can be easily adopted by internal communications and engagement practitioners A consistent and structured approach to communications planning that raises our game as a professional group A ‘joined up picture’ of communications activity. This will provide ‘air traffic control’ capability by allowing us to understand how plans in one part of the group impact another, and identify priority conflicts, overloads and opportunities.

Eight step process Objectives Audiences Change Messages Channels Activities Measures Finalise Planit takes an industry best practice approach to communications planning and integrates it with elements of best practice in BP such as the Stakeholder Engagement Approach that is widely taught to internal communications and engagement practitioners.

Co-ordination calendar The purpose of the co-ordination calendar is to facilitate communications ‘traffic management’. The user is provided with ‘line of sight’ over all planned activities at any chosen level, highlighting periods of intense and less intense communications activity, potential conflicts, overlaps and opportunities.

Reporting tool The reports function allows you to display specific information about your plan or group of plans. The information can be customized by applying the relevant filters and selecting the relevant fields. The on-screen display can be easily be downloaded into a simple Excel spreadsheet, to which you can apply customized formatting to present the report in the way you would like.
