Patterns of Growth and Development Sequential steps – based on existing capabilities and skills learned prior Individual rates of growth – influenced by heredity, environment and motivation Interrelated development rates – physical, emotional, social and intellectual growth are all happening all the time

Physical Growth of Toddlers (one and two year olds) –Wt. = 20-35 lbs / Ht. = 30-37 “ –Walks/likes run…can’t stop or turn –Feeds self w/ spoon –Stacks 2-4 blocks / walks up steps w/ help –Learning some bladder control (but still will have accidents)

Emotional and Social Growth of Toddlers Emotional Development –Very possessive—can get easily angered (temper tantrums) –Enjoys looking at picture books / stories –Often will get aggressive (slap / hit) –Shows affections (hug / kiss) –Gets easily attached to blanket / toy

Emotional and Social Growth of Toddlers Social Development –Likes to imitate others’ actions –Begin independence…say, “NO!” –Difficulty sharing –Acts shy around strangers –Enjoys adult attention / comforts distressed parents or friends –Solitary play – like playing alone –Parallel play – play beside but not with others

Intellectual Growth of Toddlers –Vocabulary = About 500 words –Enjoys singing familiar songs –Likes to choose between 2 objects –Solve simple problems/puzzles –Points to eyes/ears/nose –Object permanence – learn objects and people still exist even when they cannot see them

Physical Growth of Preschoolers (three, four and five- year olds) Large muscle skills become more refined Children at these ages are VERY energetic! Favorite activities are usually PHYSICAL –Running –Jumping –Climbing –Somersaults

Physical Growth of Preschoolers (three, four and five- year olds) Improved small muscle skills –Unbutton buttons –Pull large zippers –Lace their shoes –Brush their teeth –Draw shapes –Cut on lines with scissors

Emotional and Social Growth of Preschoolers 3 yr. olds – cooperative, like to perform simple chores and be a helper 4 yr. olds – emotionally unpredictable, like being independent 5 yr. olds – try to please, more patient and generous, express feelings through language

Emotional and Social Growth of Preschoolers Proud of parents, seek comfort, approval and emotional support Make friends easily, begin to seek status among their peers Cooperative play –2 or more children –Make rules, assign roles, create new games –Competitive games become popular

Intellectual Growth of Preschoolers Attention span and concentration skills continue to improve Age 5 eager to go to school Ask many questions..what, why, how – caregiver’s answers prepare child for reading – reading readiness exercises Learn how to count, enjoy counting games Vocabulary over 2000 words beginning to speak in complete sentences Enjoy listening to rhymes and stories

Children with Special Needs Children with disabilities and gifted and talented children are often called children with special needs. Inclusion – the placing of students of varying abilities in the same class –Physical disability –Mental disability –Learning disability –Emotional disorder –Gifted or talented
