15 Using Insurance Medical Services does NOT bill insurance other than the Student Health Insurance offered by GW. Although not required for all students, it is highly recommended. It is still important to carry insurance information at all times. Insurance is used for non-CHC services X-Ray Laboratory Specialty care Emergency Department/Hospital Visits

18 MHS VISION STATEMENT Provide, Promote, Prepare Mental Health Services at the George Washington University Colonial Health Center PROVIDES direct clinical services; PROMOTES emotional wellness and social justice; and PREPARES others for ethical and culturally competent leadership and practice.

19 Reasons Students Utilize Mental Health Services Loneliness & adjustment issues Academic & vocational stressors Family concerns, such as substance use or divorce Emotional difficulties, such as depression or anxiety Conflicts with roommates, friends, or other peers Intimate partner issues (break-ups, violence) Eating concerns / body image Grief & loss Traumatic events (current, recent, or past) Suicidal thoughts / concerns regarding self-harm

20 Mental Health Services Offered Initial consultations for services Brief individual counseling Group counseling Skills-based workshops Online self-care resources (under construction) Consultation and support for GW staff, faculty, and family members regarding students of concern Urgent-care periods Crisis intervention & crisis line (24 / 7 / 365) Referrals to community providers and specialists Outreach activities Training of future mental health professionals & current student para-professionals

21 Accessing Services: Initial Consultation Call (202) 994-5300 or come into the Colonial Health Center at Foggy Bottom during business hours, Monday through Friday Counselors are available upon request—no appointment necessary! During the initial consultation (approximately 20-30 minutes) counselor will gather information about needs and presenting concerns Initial consultations are free of charge Students will leave with a plan in place, including information about what mental health services are appropriate / recommended, and next steps for accessing these services

22 Brief Individual Counseling Confidential (within legal limits) Provided by licensed, trained mental health professionals & professionals-in-training Average number of sessions used = 4 The first handful of individual counseling sessions are free of charge Recommendation from counselor if additional sessions are warranted Charge for additional sessions, as needed / recommended Sliding scale for students with demonstrated financial need All actively enrolled GW students are eligible for individual counseling services Individual counseling is accessed through an initial consultation Urgent-care periods for crises / emergencies

23 Group Counseling Groups are unlimited and free of charge Pre-group meeting with group leaders required for most groups to determine fit Active groups are advertised on MHS website each semester Examples of groups: Mindfulness Meditation Emotional Management Disordered Eating/Body Image Trauma Survivors Grief and Loss Students in Recovery

24 Skills-based Workshops Single or multiple-session workshops, designed to teach students skills to cope with various stressors. and other topics related to emotional well-being Free, no registration or pre-screening needed Locations and times convenient to students Topics may include: Managing anxiety & stress Time management & avoiding procrastination Loneliness and making new connections All workshops, dates, and times will be advertised on our website and social media

25 Crisis Intervention & Consultation 24/7/365: crisis support available 24 hours per day, seven days per week – call (202) 994-5300 MHS collaborates with GW Hospital when a student is hospitalized Consultation services for students concerned about others (including other students and non-students) Consultation with faculty, staff, and family members about students of concern CARE Network form: students.gwu.edu/CARE MHS follows up with all CARE reports that are related to mental health concerns
