Highlight of Current Activities  The ISACC Plenary on May 6, 2010, was devoted to cloud computing  Seven members from the public and private sector presented their views on the evolution of cloud computing and the outstanding cloud computing issues  ISACC members are active in the ITU-T Cloud Computing Focus Group and in ISO/IEC JTC 1 Subcommittee 38 2

Virtuous Cycles of Growth in History Increased investment Increased access to customers and resources Increased demand for products and services Economic expansion Electric Grids Global Phone Systems Internet 3

Virtuous Cycle Enablers  New technologies promoted greater inclusion by expanding access to markets and resources  Industry standards and norms developed for connectivity and use that market participants relied upon in building new products and services to address emerging needs  New technologies gained greater value when privately developed systems were linked  New technology environments provided venues that people grew to trust for facilitating commerce  New technology environments provided greater opportunities for competition among market participants for consumers’ business 4

Cloud Computing Pay-per-use, available, convenient, on- demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released 5

Potential Virtuous Cycle for Cloud Increase in innovative cloud technologies Increase in global access and reduction in costs Increase in demand for cloud services Cloud commerce expansion Cloud Computing 6

Virtuous Cycle Enablers for Cloud  Cloud technologies facilitate communication between new and existing cloud services and infrastructure from a wide range of global market participants  Cloud computing supports interoperability scenarios relating to identity and authorization technologies used to securely span across cloud providers  Cloud computing becomes a trusted foundation for new development, so that businesses freely invest in building on top of the cloud Secure, stable, and predictable performance Transparency on security, privacy, and management policies within the cloud, including how data is protected  Cloud computing solutions promote competition by respecting the fact that cloud users generally have rights related to the data that they create and maintain in the cloud, so that users have the ability to exercise their choice to extract such data 7

Role for Standards in the Cloud Global InclusionTrust Data Ownership Preserve Interoperability Cloud Standards 8

Next Steps/Actions  ISACC recognizes the promise of cloud computing  ISACC perceives some potential policy impediments that must be addressed if cloud is to achieve its full potential, for example: Forensic data investigation and rules of evidence requirements Audit requirements Privacy and security requirements Regulatory status of cloud service offerings National sovereignty  ISACC 43 rd Plenary (May 6) on cloud computing recommended the formation of a Rapporteur Group to develop Canadian positions on these policy issues  ISACC is supportive of collaborative efforts among GSC Members on cloud computing 9
