1 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Particles and Fields Package Monthly Status Review (MSR) February 14, 2012 Dave Curtis, PFP PM

2 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Schedule Status STATIC on critical path –6.2 weeks margin to delivery to LM –Most recent delays due to STATIC PWB coupon failures, SEP painting failure Work-arounds to limit the hit –Critical Path still runs through STATIC electronics fab & test We have 2 weeks in the schedule from completion of testing to PSR –to complete EIDP –Can perhaps work the EIDP in parallel with testing to get back some schedule margin if needed

3 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 EVM PFP Printed Wiring Board fabrication has taken much longer than planed across the board, and it delaying the start of assembly work. This is exacerbated by boards failing coupon tests which need to be re-built. All remaining boards are being built by two houses to reduce risk of further coupon delays. Manpower has been increased to try to make up schedule, but at some cost. Equipment has also been consistently cover original estimate. A new budget plan has been recently submitted which takes into account these problems and exceeds the current contract value.

4 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Accomplishments FM Electronic Progress: –All 28 PFP flight PWB types fabricated BUT 5 failed coupons, 3 of which have been re-built and re-submitted to coupon evaluation 6 total are in coupon evaluation All remaining bards are being built in parallel by 2 houses – 10 PWB loaded and in test 17 PWB being loaded MAG MAD & ACHE boards in test SWEA IRAP boards assembled, tested, delivered SWEA SSL boards in test FM Mechanical –All mechanical parts all out to fab Most parts received and in assembly or plating/painting –SEP housing white paint failed Parallel recovery paths, black paint at SSL, white paint at GSFC Operational FSW progress –MAG, SEP, SWEA, SWIA, LPW mostly done, STATIC starting HFS assembled and in test; to be delivered to LM this month More in instrument sections…

5 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Ongoing Work Supporting Project planning process Supporting EMC, Payload, SIT working groups Get FM PWBs built, loaded, into test Get final mechanical parts through fabrication and into assembly

6 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 PFP RFA Status One more peer review action to go.

7 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Trades, Issues PFDPU Thermal –PFDPU gets too hot at peak operating power dissipation during early cruise –LM looking at if a radiator through the blankets can fix the problem –The alternative is to adjust the instrument powering strategy during early cruise to keep PFDPU power dissipation in acceptable limits Challenging for some of the cruise tests such as sun-point PFP Flight Software –Build 1 installed in the HFS is not 100% compatible with the eventual flight build (command and telemetry formats) –LM development of command and telemetry database and instrument soft sim require knowledge of these formats –Working with LM on deciding when formats get frozen

8 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Trades, Issues [2] Instrument Radiators (SWEA/SWIA/STATIC) –Black Nickel has poor a/e –Instruments get hot during early cruise –Looking at black paint for radiators (a/e ~1) –Analysis in progress

9 PFP MSR, 2/14/2012 Top Risks Retired LPW sensor coating issue; not due to vibration
