3 Old Stone Age (Paleolithic Era) The term Stone age is used to describe the time when people used simple stone tools.

4 Old Stone Age The old stone age began about 500,000 B.C. and lasted until about 10,000 B.C.

6 Nomads: also called hunter/gatherers, or people who moved from place to place in search of food. Fishing Hunting (Wooly Mammoth) Gathering Wild plants, berries and fruit Social structure: Developed a language which allowed them to cooperate in a hunt. Consisted of small groups of people (about 30) that traveled together. Nuclear Family - Parents and Children (you, your parents and siblings) Extended Family - Nuclear Family plus Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents. What was life like during the Old Stone Age?

7 Paleolithic Technology - Made simple tools and weapons, such as digging sticks and spears. Later invented needles, hand axes, arrows and choppers. Invented clothing made of animal skins. Learned to use fire for warmth and for cooking food.

8 What was life like during the Old Stone Age? Religion - Animism - Belief that spirits live in the material world (mountains, rivers, streams & rocks) Cave Paintings - May have had religious meaning - could help with the hunt.

10 Neolithic Revolution Happened around 10,000 B.C. Also called the agricultural revolution At the end of the last Ice Age the world began warming and new crops began to grow The New Stone Age begins (Neolithic Era) This began the shift from hunting and gathering food to farming People domesticated and tamed wild animals like dogs, sheep and goats

11 What was life like during the New Stone Age? Social Structure - People no longer had to move to find food They were able to settle down. Result? Villages develop Houses and property Societies developed Food became more plentiful allowing population to increase Began burying dead with care - maybe believed in afterlife Buried tools and weapons with their dead.

13 Technology - Increased population led to more and better ideas To aid with farming people invented hoes to turn the soil People began making cloth from wool, weaving baskets, making nets for fishing and began using animals to pull plows Major inventions Wheel - improved land transportation and made work easier Sail - improved transportation on water and made longer voyages possible What was life like during the New Stone Age?
