2 Genre: Folk Tale A folk tale is a story based on the traditions of a people or region which is handed down from one generation to the next and becomes legendary.

3 Strategy: Analyze Story Structure
Thinking about and analyzing story structure helps you understand how the characters, setting, and plot work together.

4 Skill: Character, Setting, Plot
Setting is the time and place in which a narrative occurs. Plot is the series of events that take place in a story. These events give the story a beginning, middle, and end. The characters in a story are who the story is about.

5 foreman A worker who supervises a group of workers, as in a factory or on a farm. The foreman was in charge of seeing that the cars came off the assembly line in time.

6 employee A person who works for a person or business for pay.
A good employee is one who always does his or her best on the job.

7 GRITTED Ground or held tightly clamped together, as with the teeth.
The weight lifter gritted her teeth as she lifted 300 pounds.

8 fulfill To carry out or bring to completion; cause to happen.
Miguel was able to fulfill his promise as a musician by mastering the piano.

9 gloated Thought about with satisfaction or sometimes mean-spirited pleasure. The town gloated over its team’s victory in the state tournament.

10 flourish To grow or develop strongly or prosperously; thrive.
In order for a child to grow and flourish, he or she must eat nutritious food and get lots of rest and exercise.

11 vigorously Done in a powerful or forceful way. The lawyer vigorously defended the U.S. Constitution.

12 gleefully In a joyous or merry way.
The children ran gleefully toward the ice-cream truck.

13 Story Words rancheros: Mexican Spanish for “ranchers”
mi capataz: Spanish for “my foreman” compadre: Spanish for “friend” or “pal” buenos dias: Spanish greeting meaning “good day” senorita: Spanish form of address for an unmarried woman mi patron: Spanish for “my employer’ or “my boss”
