ORIGINS OF RACE (CONTINUED)

IT’S OK TO TALK ABOUT RACE Race is such a touchy topic because it is often associated with all of the negative history and oppression of minorities in this country. But the only way to bridge the gap created by racism and move forward as a more unified society is to talk about it: all of it.

“RACISM IS LIKE POLLUTION. WE DIDN’T CAUSE IT, BUT IT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX IT.”

“COLORBLINDNESS” WILL NOT END RACISM. Colorblindness is when we “do not see” someone’s race. Colorblindness often comes from good intentions: we don’t want to seem prejudiced. But when we do not see race, we fail to see something important about a person’s identity. And when we do not see race, it’s hard to see or fight racism.

Q: IF COLORBLINDNESS WON’T END RACISM, WHAT CAN WE DO? We can be multiculturalists. Multiculturalism means celebrating all ethnicities and cultural heritages as valuable and worth seeing. Multiculturalism means being curious about people who are different from us, and wanting to learn more about them. Multiculturalism means seeing and fighting against racism and injustice.

REFLECTION Given everything that we have discussed yesterday and today, how will this new information shape how we view history in this class throughout the year? (Evolutionary Origins of Race, Social origins of ‘race’ concept, and about discrimination)

SYSTEMS OF GOVERNMENT LT: I CAN DEFINE DIFFERENT SYSTEMS OF GOVERNMENTS AND BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEY OPERATE BY PARTICIPATING IN A SIMULATION.

DEMOCRACY – RULE BY THE PEOPLE People are in charge of making laws and governing the country. Simple majority Switzerland

AUTOCRACY - SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT BY ONE PERSON WITH ABSOLUTE POWER No constraints on the person in power. Louis XIV Monarchy – Rule of one, hereditary

ARISTOCRACY – ‘RULE OF THE BEST’ power is in the hands of a small, privileged, ruling class Oligarchy: Rule of the few, usually wealthy, land- owning, or influential member of society Sparta

TOTALITARIAN (DICTATOR): system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state. (Hitler’s Germany)

SIMULATION First, we split up into groups of 5-6 Second, I will randomly pass out a notecard that says a system of government on it. Once your group knows their government type, read the description and your ‘rules’ Third, for a few of the groups, I will help you randomly decide who does what role. Fourth, Look over the amount of money that your group has and the prices for various things. (Someone pull out a calculator for each group) You must follow the rules of your government type and may not spend more money than you have. Three Problems will arise and you must attempt to solve the problem in each government type.

INSTRUCTIONS For each problem, your group must come up with a solution in 5-10 minutes. You can’t borrow money (there are no banks) and you cannot spend more than you have. You may change one of your old solutions if a new problem makes you need more money. Remain true to your role. Support what that person would actually support when trying to solve the problems.

PROBLEM #1: NO RAIN For 3 weeks, there has been no rain. The crops are dying, and the only way to save them is to build canals from nearby river to get water to the farms in the city-state. There are three rivers near your City State.

PROBLEM #2: CIVIL CONFLICT Because of the lack of rain, people began stealing each other’s crops, and now fights break out each day. People must stop stealing from and fighting with each other.

PROBLEM #3: FOREIGN INVASION A neighboring city-state has learned of the civil conflicts in your city state. They are marching on your city with an army of 5,000 soldiers and will be there in one month’s time.

POST-SIMULATION QUESTIONS Following the simulation, please discuss the post-simulation questions as a group. We will share our answers in about 6 minutes
