2 Note Taking Reminder… I would like you to write down anything that is colored red. I will be walking around and checking who is taking notes, and that will be factored into your class participation grade. Some quizzes moving forward will be open notebook, rewarding those who take good notes on a constant basis.

4 Government As a class we will create a list of some different types of government a country can have: A_____________ is a form of government where citizens choose and replace the government through free and fair elections. There is active participation from the citizens in politics and civic life. Monarchs use titles as king, queen, emperor, or empress. Monarchs were once common throughout the world, but now they are rare. A ___________is a form of government in which power effectively rests with a small number of people. 5 As Greek city-states grew, wealthy nobles seized power of the city-states, and tensions rose between them and the owners of small farms Infer why farmers would resent the nobles. (Turn and talk) *Objective-Students will be able to understand the types of government in Greek City-States.

6 Farm owners would usually borrow money from the nobles to buy land. What would happen if farmers couldn’t repay their debt??? (Turn and talk) If farmers couldn't’t repay their debt, their land would be taken, they would have to sell themselves into slavery. *Objective-Students will be able to understand the types of government in Greek City- States.

7 Small farmers, merchants, and artisans called for reform and for a greater voice in the government. Because these people didn’t own land- why didn’t they have a role in the polis? They didn't’t have a role in the polis because they weren’t citizens. *Objective-Students will be able to understand the types of government in Greek City-States.

8 Tyrants- Someone who seizes power and rules with total authority Tyrants overthrew the Greek nobles in 600 B.C. *Objective-Students will be able to understand the types of government in Greek City-States.

9 Tyrants in Ancient Greek Reading We will read a passage from the textbook detailing tyrants in Ancient Greece. I will start reading the first paragraph, then we will popcorn read until the passage is finished. *Objective-Students will be able to understand the types of government in Greek City-States.

10 Lets go over the questions before you answer them on their own I will give you 5 minutes to answer the questions. Circle where you found #1, Underline where you found #2, put a box around where you found #3 Once you finish, you may hand it in to count as a grade, then we will go over the answers as a class once everyone is complete *Objective-Students will be able to understand the types of government in Greek City-States.
