6 Ancient Philosophers Ancient philosophers in Greece, China, India began systematic investigation of human behaviour They began to collect and record knowledge Investigations centred on human behaviour and what made people act the way they did.

7 Folk Wisdom Much of humanity was still ruled by superstition and unproven ideas Passed on through generations in form of folk wisdom and eventually proven to contain some truth and were psychologically sound For example: Yoga complex mind and body conditioning began in India over 5000 yrs ago

8 Phrenology is the study of the human head. Theorists believed that by examining the shape & unevenness of the skull, one could discover the development of particular brain “organs” responsible for different abilities and personalities.

9 Birth of Psychology Field of psychology dates to late 19 th century in Germany & Russia Behaviours such as reaction time of parts of body, length of people’s attention span and perceptions of 5 senses were investigated

11 Modern Approaches Have challenged the field with even newer ways of seeing things Influence of female psychologists have forced the profession to rethink studies that sometimes examined male behaviour as if it were typical of all human behaviour This is called androcentricity
