2 Types Of Abuse  Emotional/Verbal  Physical

3 Statistics  On average more than 3 women a day are murdered by their husbands/boyfriends in the U.S. In 2005, 1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner  Women are 84% of spouse abuse victims and 86% of victims of abuse at the hands of a partner  About 3/4 of the persons who commit family violence are male

4 Signs of Emotional Abuse  Using economic power to control you  Making you afraid by using looks, gestures or actions  Controlling you through minimizing, denying and blaming  Continually criticizing you, calling you names, shouting at you

5 Signs of Physical Abuse Do You…  feel afraid of your partner much of the time?  avoid certain topics out of fear of angering your partner?  wonder if you’re the one who is crazy?  feel emotionally numb or helpless? Does Your Partner…  humiliate or yell at you?  criticize you and put you down?  ignore or put down your opinions or accomplishments?  treat you so badly that you’re embarrassed for your friends or family to see?

7 How To Protect Yourself From Abuse  Get a restraining order  Go to a women’s shelter  Tell Someone  If living in same house, move out
