1 Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk BTEC IT Unit 05 - Lesson 02 Network Devices

2 Session Objectives Be able to describe the purpose and function of different hardware devices commonly found on a network.

3 Network Hardware Devices Networking hardware typically refers to equipment facilitating the use of a computer network. They are electrical devices which need allow data to travel between them and form the topology, Typical network hardware includes server, clients, routers, switches, hubs, gateways, access points, network interface cards, networking cables, network bridges, modems, ISDN adapters, firewalls and other related hardware, When producing your coursework you need to be able to demonstrate that you can identify the function of devices and describe what each does.

4 Network Devices You need to be able to describe the function of each of these devices: Network Servers – (these will be covered next lesson) Network Interface Card (NIC) – wired and wireless, Switches, Hubs - Active and Passive versions Gateways, Bridges, Routers, Repeaters, Network cables and connectors, Patch panels and rack cabinets, Trunking and network face plates, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), Vendor-specific hardware.
