Temperate Grasslands Cameron Stone
2
Description of Biome Located in the midwest, Argentina and Uraguay, and the Eurasian steppes, characterized by rich soil and generally flat geography Physical Factors: abundance of producers, copious sunlight Chemical Factors: high amount of nutrients in the soil such as nitrogen and phosphorus
3
Climate Temperatures vary greatly between seasons. Up to 100⁰F in the summer and down to as low as -40⁰F in the winter. Usually receive around 20-35in of precipitation.

6
Typical Animal Bison: Herbivores ~500,000 in North America Travel in herds Move continuously as they feed.
7
Typical Plant Purple Needle Grass: Stays green almost year round Roots extend down 20ft Produces small seeds that look like thread and needle Very drought resistant Old plants will outcompete young plants
8
Environmental Damage Conversion to farmland Reduces habitat Reduced biodiversity Less space for roaming animals (bison)
9
Solutions Creation of parks (Yellowstone) 36 CFR 213.1 – Prevents development on National Grasslands – Protects environment and harvesting thereof – Provides for the sustaining of protected habitat
