2. LEARNING OBJECTIVE To understand what MACRO photography is. To understand various different ways of achieving a MACRO effect.

3. MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY Macro photography is taking extremely close-up images of subjects. The technically correct definition would be to take an image at a 1:1 ratio but, in general usage, the term has come to mean any close-up photography.

4. SIMPLE MACRO Using a program such as PHOTOSHOP you could take an image from a normal camera and crop and enlarge it so that it has a ration greater than 1:1.

5. MACRO LENS Some lenses are specially constructed to allow for magnification. You will see that these lenses will have the ration printed on the outside of them somewhere e.g. 1:1. 1:3, 1:5 etc.

6. REVERSAL RINGS AND EXTENSION TUBES These add-ons work with any lens and are designed to change the focal distance so that it is very close to the subject. This can make focusing very difficult as the aperture needs to be wide open and the depth of field is very shallow.

7. TASK Take a variety of images experimenting with MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY. You can create a MACRO effect using any of the techniques that we have highlighted. EXTENSION: Make a variety of MACRO photographs in different ways and as part of your annotation you need to discuss the benefits, drawbacks and the effectiveness of the different methods.
