2 National Interest The policy followed by McKinley, Taft and Roosevelt to follow a foreign policy that advanced The United States' interests.

3 Big Stick Policy A foreign policy followed by President Roosevelt that used quiet diplomacy but would also rely on using force to achieve the nation’s goals.

4 Roosevelt Corollary was the idea of President Roosevelt that a logical extension of the Monroe Doctrine was that the United States should use its power in the Western Hemisphere to maintain peace and protect weaker nations.

5 Dollar Diplomacy Is the idea that a strong economic presence abroad would advance U. S. policy and decrease the need for military force.

6 Moral Diplomacy Was a policy urged by President Wilson that was based on our countries democratic ideals and not self interests. Basic human right were to be respected over economic interests.

7 Colony is the economy, government and culture are controlled by the home country.

8 Self determination Was supported by President Woodrow Wilson and is when countries are allowed to choose their own form of government and political destination.

9 Annexation Is when a country seizes a territory into its own country such as when the United States took over Hawaii from the native islanders and place white plantation owners into power.

10 Protectorate Is when a country is allowed to control its government and economy but is security is guaranteed by a larger imperial power. This was the case with American Somoa.

11 Commonwealth Is when the country has control over its own laws and finances but do not its defense or tariffs. This is the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico.

12 Spheres of Influence Were when foreign countries demanded areas to trade in China and land for military bases in exchange for supporting them in their war with Korea.

13 Open Door Policy Is when he United States fought with European Powers to keep Chinese markets open to trade from all countries. This policy was promoted by Secretary od State John Hay in 1899.

14 1 President Roosevelt and Taft believed in pursuing American economic interests through military and force and economic policy such as dollar diplomacy. President Wilson was more of an idealist seeking self determination for other countries.

15 2 The united states used military and economic force to pursue its interests in nations abroad such as in Panama, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Hawaii

16 3 Hawaii is a state because the United States needed a base in the Pacific during the Spanish American War.

17 4 The main motive of foreign policy during the early 1900s was to promote economic development abroad and support American industry.
