3 APPLICATION FILING PERIODS PRIVATE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Check college websites for applications & deadlines Check if they use the Common Application Most private colleges require counselor and teacher recommendations; submit requests 1 month in advance of deadlines.

4 ITEMS NEEDED TO GET STARTED Transcript “a-g” Approved College Prep Classes Test Scores Social Security #, CA Student ID # Schools Attended Name of school, Dates attended, Address CEEB code - 053297 (check UC Pathways or CSU Mentor online for schools in California)

5 ITEMS NEEDED TO GET STARTED Parent Information Name(s), address(es) Annual Income (optional unless applying for fee waiver) Date each parent began living in California Credit Card Account Number; Expiration Date Card holder’s name, billing address

6 APPLICATION TIPS Universities get 10,000-50,000 applications—don’t get lost in the shuffle Spell your name the same on all documents H. S. Transcript, SAT and ACT tests, Social Security card If different, be sure to indicate an “A.K.A.” (Also Known As) reference Take the online application virtual tour

7 APPLICATION TIPS Use a Current Web Browser Free Downloads available from CSU Mentor or UC Pathways sites DISABLE Pop-up Blockers This is very important as much of the application depends on pop-up information. Check your email account regularly. Adjust spam filters to allow bulk mail. Save your work using the “save/logout” button when taking a break.

8 APPLICATION TIPS Repeating to make up a “D” or “F” grade UC requires that you show every grade, including the “D” or “F” and the improved grade. CSU prefers that you only report the repeated, higher grade; don’t show the grade of “D” or “F”. Type of schedule? Indicate “SEMESTER” system. Under “Other,” type in “block schedule.”

10 UC Application Use Additional Comments box for clarification, expansion on important details: Additional names Visa issues Describe anything else that you have not had the opportunity to include elsewhere in your application. 550-word limit Coursework other than A-G In Activities and Awards section

11 EOP Application For UC application, this is a check box and text field box For CSU application this is a check box that will prompt a supplemental application for each campus

12 APPLICATION TIPS Academically rigorous senior year UC likes to see 4 or 5 academic classes Apply Broadly 2 “stretch” schools 2-3 “good chance” schools 2-3 “for sure” schools Review Your Summary before submitting Look for notations of “no information added” and be sure you intended to leave it blank. Make a copy for your records

13 APPLICATION TIPS These are legal documents Be thorough and honest Changes in your class schedule Email after any change is made so your final transcript in June agrees with your application Have official test score reports sent directly to the universities to which you applied. Online signature: Follow application directions Check when you should apply for housing.

14 AFTER YOU ARE ACCEPTED! Both CSU and UC require that everyone accepted still take a placement exams Might be waived with high enough scores on SAT Reasoning Test or ACT; EAP through STAR Testing; and/or AP exams. Watch your email for placement test dates and test sites. (UC tests everyone on the same day in April so watch for their registration deadline).

15 AFTER YOU ARE ACCEPTED! Watch for: Housing deadlines Orientation registration (register for early dates as this is when you select your classes). Sending a final transcript Provide SCHS’ registrar with a stamped envelope addressed to the school you will be attending before you leave in June. Transcripts will be mailed by June 30 th. (Place your name in upper left corner or identification purposes).
