2. Nervous System The Nervous System works with other body systems to help organisms respond to stimuli. Stimuli are changes in the environment that bring about responses from the body. The nervous system in many animals includes: – The brain – The spinal cord – Nerves – Sense organs

3. Nervous System is divided into 2 parts 1. The brain and spinal cord make up the Central Nervous System. 2. All other nerves and sense organs make up the Peripheral Nervous System.

4. Central Nervous System The spinal cord is a thick band of nerves that carries impulses, or messages, to and from the brain. The central nervous system receives and interprets messages from the peripheral nerves. The brain also controls heartbeat, breathing, and the muscles in the digestive system.

Nerve Cells Neurons: Nerve cells. 3 kinds of neurons: – Sensory neurons – receives messages from the body and the environment. – Motor neurons – Carry messages for the brain and spinal cord to the body’s organs and glands. – Associative neurons – Connect the sensory neurons to the motor neurons.
