2 The Preamble (Introduction) We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

3 Article I Legislative Branch 1.Creates and votes for the laws. 2.Divided into the Senate and the House of Representatives. Together they are called Congress. a.Each state gets 2 members in the Senate and they are elected to a 6 year term. There are NO term limits. b.House of Representatives members are elected to a 2 year term. Number of members each state gets is determined by population. There are NO term limits.

25 Checks and Balances 1.The government is divided into 3 branches. a.The branches are equal in power. b.Each branch has powers over the other branches. This protects the country from having one group gain too much power and our government becoming a tyranny.

27 Bill of Rights The first 10 amendments (changes) to the Constitution. They guaranteed basic rights and freedoms for the people. It gave rights to those accused of a crime. Gives citizens the right to keep and bear arms.
