WHY HONOUR RELATED VIOLENCE ?

The honour-related violence refers to the punishment of girls and women for sexual or societal indiscretions which bring shame on the family. The honour-related violence has become increasingly visible in the world during the last years and its forms range from oppression through to killing.

HONOUR BASED WAY OF THINKING Physical violence Financial violence Sexual abuse Emotional abuse Silent threat

HONOUR BASED WAY OF THINKING Honour is the highest value Honour is private matter and shared by the whole family Men’s duty is to maintain the family’s honour Immoral behaviour of women breaks the codes of honour Honour is the same as the moral reputation of persons/people/state. Honour thinking is based on the belief that the most important thing in life is the family’s honour. The honour indicates the honour of men that is maintained by “moral” behaviour of women. The honour is linked to what other people think. To protect the honour one has to follow certain rules. In different cultures there are different ideas on how women and men should behave to be honourable.

The whole family shares the honour of a family The honour is not a private matter Men are responsible for protecting the family’s honour The honour depends on how women behave Men control women’s behaviour Honour codes are different in different societies The honour-related crimes are forms of violence to control the sexual behaviour of women and youngsters in order to protect the honour of the man and thereby the whole family. The object of the crime and punishment is mother, daughter, sister or other female relative The honour has been broken, when immoral or assumed act has become public Honour codes are different in different societies The most serious crimes of honour are murders. The woman is killed as a punishment because she has destroyed the man’s honour. It is also an honour-crime to put such pressure upon a woman that she commits suicide to preserve the family’s honour.
