4 Changing Immigration Patterns President Lyndon Johnson led the fight to pass the Immigration Act of 1965. This new law still set limits on immigration, but did it in a fairer way. Relatives of current citizens were given preference. Those who could provide a needed skill and were educated also had a better chance. 5 Why Do People Come Here? The United States has a blend of many resources found in most countries. So why did and do many people want to come here? We are known for our strong economy, education system, and advanced medical technology. The most attractive thing to immigrants is the reputation for the rights it guarantees to its citizens.

6 Migration From Other States Migration From Other States During the 1970s, the U.S. economy changed As the demand for steel decreased and manufacturing jobs moved overseas, the jobs in the north were lost. Texas, however, was experiencing a “boom” as a result of…you guessed it: OIL. Our economy was the envy of the world at that time. So, logically, people came where the economy was good. From 1970 to 2000, Texas’ population increased 80%. Most of the increase was from those migrating from other states to find work.

10 Activity Activity Tomorrow you will take a tour of a “CULTURAL MUSEUM”. You will look at 8-10 photographs of various cultures. You will complete a chart of artifacts, identifying what they are, what they symbolize, and how they are either shared with or are exclusive to another culture. You will then write a reflection about what you observed and how Texas is a melting pot for many cultures.
