2 Parliamentary Law objectives 1 motion at a time (item of business) – Prevents confusion Extends courtesy to everyone – Recognized to speak Majority Rules – Unpopular ideas are not adopted Rights of the minority are protected – Everyone gets to have a say and vote

3 Definition of Parli-Pro Formal, Organized meeting using well-defined set of rules Roberts Rules of Order Chairman presides using gavel as symbol of authority – Fair and impartial unless they have relinquished the duties of the chair

4 Gavel: 1 tap – sit down, announcement of a vote, adjourn 2 taps – call to order (get order) 3 taps – stand up(rise)

5 Agenda Prepared and passed out before the meeting List of what will be discussed at the meeting

6 Motion To present a “new idea” “I move….” – I move to purchase a pig for our class.” – Must be seconded, discussed and voted on.

7 Amendment Change how motion states 3 ways: add words, take out words, substitute “I move to amend….by…..”

8 Majority One more than ½ of members Can be determined by a voice vote Use a counted vote if it is to close to call

9 Minority Less than half ? Out of 100 “Yes!” 49 “You are correct!”

10 Quorum 2/3 of the total membership Needed for certain motions/abilities (Previous Question, Suspend the Rules)
