3 RATIONALE Why Standardization? It is essential for  System building  Sharing infrastructures and platforms  Integrating different systems  Enabling the transition from experimental to operational phase Concerns  Will it constraint the versatility/flexibility?  Will the integration be easier or more complex?

5 RATIONALE Visions Instruments can be freely interchanged between observatories worldwide Instruments are calibrated according to agreed upon standard procedures Data quality can be checked and specified Data are described with a standard format and vocabulary Deployment, maintenance and service can be carried out by different groups

6 BACKGROUND Visions have to be broken down into tasks How efficient does it have to be? How broad is the range of applicability? What is the present capability?

24 GEOSS Workshop XXVII - Conclusions DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES GEO should help with the formulation of an ocean community of practice GEO should support intergovernmental formalization of interoperability and coordination of an operational mission for ocean observations. This could include coordinated funding GEO support is requested for Identification and coordination of societal benefits from ocean data.
