2 Preview3/25 Learning Target: We will learn to explain the P.E.S. characteristics of Reconstruction Success Criteria: I will organize the major characteristics of Reconstruction using Cornell Notes.

3 The South is destroyed The Civil War ended April 9, 1865. Most of the land in the South was destroyed by the Civil War. The South would need to be rebuilt. This rebuilding of the South was called Reconstruction.

4 Reconstruction Plan President Lincoln wanted to reunite the nation as quickly as possible. Any southern state with at least 10% of its voters making a pledge to be loyal to the U.S. could be readmitted to the Union. The South also had to accept a ban on slavery.

6 Lincoln is assassinated before he could start on his reconstruction plan. Andrew Johnson is the next president. He is a democrat from the South. – Congress feels that he is weak after he pardons all Southerners – Radical Republicans tried to get Johnson removed from office

Provide emergency relief to people whose homes/lands were destroyed South is poor after the war due to decrease There was a great increase in…Tenant farming – people reside on and farmland owned by a landlord… Sharecropping – people farming another man’s land for a share of the profit South moved to industries which created an industrial boom The Ku Klux Klan was a secret society opposed to African Americans obtaining civil rights, particularly the right to vote. Jim Crow laws created to segregate public space. Segregation - the legal separation of blacks and whites in public places Freedmen’s Bureau was established in 1865 by the Federal Government to provide the following for freed slaves Carpetbaggers- Northerners who went to the South to help create new state politics but took advantage of the situation Scalawags-Southerners who worked with the Republicans to help with reconstructing the South

10 Preview3/24 Learning Target: We will learn to evaluate legislative reform programs of the Radical Reconstruction Congress Success Criteria: I will read and evaluate the purpose of legislative reform in 3-4 sentences completing a guided reading practice.
