Energy LO: To identify different sources of energy and select which sources the UK should invest in for the future. All of you will know what fossil fuels are and the problems associated with them Most of you will know the major renewable fuels and the problems associated with them Some of you will be able to suggest what the UK should do in the future to meet our energy needs

Atlas Work Study the Energy Production Map (and table) at the top of P.124. 1.Which 3 countries produce the most energy? 2.Which regions generate the least energy? Look at the first three pie charts below 3.Which region has most of the worlds oil and gas reserves? 4.Which two continents have the most coal? Study the Energy Consumption Map (and table) 5. Which 3 countries consume (use) the most energy? Which region are they in? 6. Which 3 countries use the least energy? Which region are they in? 7. What is the pattern between the countries who generate the most and those who consume the most energy? Describe and explain the pattern?

Retro fossil fuels use energy from the sun. They’re made of rotted remains of prehistoric plants and animals that have been buried and squashed under rocks and sand. When they’re alive they trap energy in them which they release when they’re burnt. Gas, coal & oil are fossil fuels

Over the past 40 years people have realised that we’re using our energy resources unsustainably. We now need to start using more renewable energy. Renewables are good because they don’t run out and they don’t release greenhouse gases but they each have problems. Hip Alternative Fuels include geothermal, nuclear, hydroelectric, tidal, wave, wind, solar and biomass. Each one can be used without running out.

Key Terms renewable = resources we can use over and over again and they'll still be there e.g. solar non-renewable = resources we can only use once e.g. coal or nuclear (also called finite) fossil fuel = energy source made of living things (coal, oil and gas)

7. What does this graph show is happening to the amount of energy we use in the UK? 8. What sort of energy are we using more of? 9. Why might it be a problem if this pattern doesn’t start to change?

Energy Sources WaveSolarBiomass Hydro electric TidalWindNuclearFossil FuelsGeothermal We’re going to watch a 5 minute long video. During the video you’re going to make notes on 9 types of energy Types of energy - watch to help with homework

http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/655.htm Homework You are a government minister who works for the energy department. You need to decide what sort of energy types we in the UK should be investing in. 1.Pick the three types of energy you want to invest in 2.For each one, justify your choice. This means you need to say why you think it is good, explain if it could meet our needs and explain what the dangers or problems of that energy type are. You will need to do additional research and I expect this to be around 1.5 sides long.
