Chapter One

 In high school you get at least 30 hours of classroom study @ Harper (phase 1)  4 days of range @ Simeon range- hands on training (phase 2)  6 days of traffic on the street (phase 3)

 Legally permitted to drive with a licensed adult (21) during non- restricted hours (before curfew)  You will receive the application for your instruction permit AFTER you have earned a blue card (from me) AND paid the $50.00 fee (blank money order) for range  You must be between the ages of 15-17 by June 2009 to qualify for a permit

 YOUR BLUE CARD IS NOT YOUR PERMIT! YOU CANNOT LEGALLY DRIVE ON A BLUE CARD!  Once your permit is issued, it is good for 24 mths (2 yrs)  You must have it for 9 mths before you can get your license unless you turn 18 yrs old 1 st !  The cost for your permit is $20 (turns into your license) and that goes to the Secretary of State along with your permit application

 Students who receive an A or B at the end of this course AND receive an A or B in traffic may not have to take the driving test with the Secretary of State  However, you must complete both range and traffic- you cannot bypass these phases unless you are 18 yrs old  If you are 18 years old, you must complete this course then go to Secretary of State to take the driving test to get your license

 You may have to take the driving test anyway even if you qualify for a waiver because the SOS spot checks students whose birthday falls on a certain day!  Once you receive your license, you will have to renew after your 21 st birthday  After that, you renew your license every 4 years

 You will have to have your vision screened each time you renew  You may have to take the written or driving test again, based on your driving history!  If you lose your permit, it cost $5 for a new one  If you lose you license, it cost $5 for a replacement

 If you change your name, you have 30 days to notify the state  However, if you move you must notify the state within 10 days

 To get a license to drive you need to present acceptable ID to prove your name, date of birth, social security number, residency and signature  Acceptable forms of ID are: Blue Card, State ID, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate and your Official High School Transcript

 To receive your DL, if you are under 18, you must take a parent or guardian with you to the SOS, present all necessary documents (mentioned in last slide), your permit, your waiver (if you get one), your 50 hours sheet

 If you pretend to be someone you are not and sign the license, you will be charged with perjury  You may be sent to jail for 1-3 yrs  You may be fined $25,000.00

 If you are under age 21, the words “Under 21 Until” will appear in red and “Under 18 Until” will appear in yellow along the right side of the photo.  Beginning July 1, 2009, the Secretary of State’s office will establish the Emergency Contact Database. This database allows you, as an Illinois resident and driver’s license/ID cardholder, to voluntarily register your emergency contact information to be used should you be involved in a crash or become incapacitated in some way. This information could then be accessed by law enforcement to more quickly contact someone for assistance on your behalf.
