1 UNDERPOPULATION Underpopulation is a very recent issue to the world. It is quite a rare situation , compared to overpopulation, and the consequences are not quite as serious. However, if underpopulation in some countries is reduced it can help reduce overpopulation in other countries, so the problem must be addressed. Joe Watson and Alex Gibson study where this underpopulation occurs, and why it does so.

2 WHAT IS UNDERPOPULATION?
Underpopulation is exactly the opposite of overpopulation. Underpopulation means an excess amount of resources for the number of people living in the area, or a shortage of people for the amount of resources that are produced. Underpopulation has nothing to do with the population figures of a country, or its population density. E.g. Countries like Chad with a low population and density are considered overpopulated, while countries like Belgium, more populous and more dense are considered more underpopulated.

3 Where Does Underpopulation Occur
- Underpopulation occurs most commonly in MEDC’s, where large amounts of resources are produced, and the population is already very well off. - Good examples of underpopulation can be seen in countries of the European Union, such as Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Holland etc… E.U. countries and the U.S. are most underpopulated Japan, Australia, N.Z., - fairly underpopulated

4 Example - Sweden Sweden is a good example of an underpopulated country. This has happened due its declining population, ( stage 4 of the demographic transition model), while its resources are still being produced. Here are the main reasons why the population has dropped: -Undesirable Climate – too cold. -Natural Hazards – such as blizards/snowstorms -Bad Terrain. – Hard to travel and access.
