3 Society and Family Life Society and family life changed to reflect the values of Islam.

Society and Family Life Islamic society – The Quran gave detailed instructions on how the people should live.” Kindness,generosity, honesty, and tolerance were valued – All Muslims are supposed to be equal – One group of people in the Islamic Empire were not considered equal, instead they were slaves.

Society and Family Life Roles of Women – Women in nomadic societies had fewer rights than men. – The Quran says that women should be allowed to earn a living, and should be able to inherit their fathers property. – They had duties as teachers and prayer leaders for other women. – Muslims women studies astronomy, medicine, law, philosophy, history, Arabic grammar, literature, theology, and chess.theology

6 B. Urban Centers Cities became highly organized centers of government, education, and culture.

11 C. Cultural life Literature, history, and philosophy – Islamic poets wrote poems of great beauty, and other Islamic writers told stories that are still read today. – Poets had long been an important part of Islamic culture. – Some were Sufis who wrote deeply religious poetry.

Cultural life art and architecture – During this time some of the most beautiful buildings in the world were designed and built by Islamic architects and builders. – Islamic artist developed calligraphy, the art of writing. – Carpets from this region are also works of art that developed during this time.

13 D. Persians influence and Islamic Spain D. PERSIANS CULTURAL INFLUENCES WERE STRONG DURING THE ABBASID DYNASTY, AND CULTURE FLOURISHED IN ISLAMIC SPAIN.

Persians influence and Islamic Spain PERSIAN INFLUENCE – Persians had a strong influence on the ISLAMIC EMPIRE. – THE PERSIANS INFLUENCE WAS STRONGEST IN ARABIC LITERATURE, COURT MANNERS, AND GOVERNMENT. – PERSIANS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRADITIONS, ARCHITECTURE, AND CRAFTS ALL INFLUENCED THE ISLAMIC EMPIER.

15 D. Persians influence and Islamic Spain ISLAMIC SPAIN – THE ISLAMIC CONQUEST OF SPAIN BEGAN IN 711 AND WAS COMPLETED BY 718. – RAHMAN III BROUGTH SPAIN TO A PERIOD OF ITS STRONGEST POWER AND GREATEST CULTUAL ACHIVMENT. – HE PAID THEM WELL AND ENCOURAGED OTHERS TO MIGRATE TO SPAIN.
