ENG 102 MultiMedia Presentation Spring 2015 What is research, but a blind date with knowledge – William Henry. Let’s take your blind date out in public and show her off!

o 4-7 minutes (if you go under or over there is a 10 point penalty) o You will cover all the areas of your paper: Intro, history, extent, repercussions, solutions (both), conclusion o You will not read your paper – but you can obviously embed the content o You must have three interactions with the class and three interactions with your media (I know this can be confusing – we will talk about it more later!) o You must have three different types of media o You must have a 30 second PSA (public service announcement) for your band aid solution. (And yes, this counts as a media.) o You must have a “final thought” The Requirements:

o Wait – what is the final thought? This is finally your chance to share what you think about the topic. It is the very last part of your presentation and it should only be 30 seconds to a minute tops. You can share your opinion – any aspect of it, as long as you are appropriate!

o iMovie (this is free with your DVUSD app!) (downloading iMovie can be weird – see my directions on the next slide!) o Keynote (much like power point) o Prezi o Haiku Deck o FlowVella o Corkboard o Animoto (30 second videos are free) Apps – Essentially your entire presentation will be off your iPad. Take some time to download and explore the apps below! Get a feel for what will work best for you! We will use the Apple TV to project your presentation when it is your turn to present. These are just suggestions! If you find other amazing ways to put together your presentation – go for it!

o If you want to be old school and present off a presentation from your jump drive – you can do that. You cannot use power point though. You will have one minute set up and get everything ready to begin your presentation. I do challenge you to use the technology we have on your iPad! PC Option

First, know that you do NOT have to pay for iMovie! It comes with your DVUSD bundle! Don’t get tricked into paying for it! Downloading iMovie...

Click on DVUSD App

Click on Install next to iMovie. You also want to download Keynote from here if you haven’t yet. It will have you log in and then ask you to agree to their rules. It takes a little bit of time to download – so please be patient!

Back to your multimedia presentation...

o You can make your presentation so you don’t have to speak at all – if you want this type of presentation you probably should embed everything in iMovie. o You can include video clips you find from YouTube or a Ted Talk or even a clip from the news in your presentation and that would count as a media. Just be sure that you only show a snippet of something – probably no more than 30 seconds of a “canned” video from somewhere else. You have a lot of requirements to hit, so you don’t want another video to distract your presentation. If you choose to use a video from somewhere else it must be school appropriate and cannot be a clip from a movie – no matter what the rating. Some items to consider:

You will have to complete a Presentation Planning Sheet – this is due on the day you present. It can be a little complicated. Take a minute and go to our main web page and open the document. You will find it by scrolling down to the MultiMedia Presentation section. Look over the handout – once you have done this, continue going through the slides... The Presentation Planning Sheet

o First, you must fill out the planning sheet – it is due the day you present! If you don’t have this sheet you will lose points! You will give the plan to me right before you present! o What is the information you plan to communicate? Your thesis. o Select your audience outcome – how familiar is your audience with your topic? (Remember, you always work to meet the needs of your audience!)

o Three different times in your presentation you must interact with the audience. o How do you do this? Pose a question to the class, call on someone, take a quick poll (how many people...) think of creative opportunities for this! o When do you do this? Whenever you want, but it must be in your presentation somewhere! Audience Interactions

How do you fill out the planning sheet? Opportunity #1: Introduction (Your opportunity will be where in the presentation you will do this – your only options are: Introduction, History, Extent, Repercussions, Solution, Conclusion). Nature of Interaction: Ask the class to raise their hands if they ever watched a rated R movie before they were seventeen. (You are just telling me what you plan to do!) Hint: I will have your planning sheet, so be sure you have something to remind you when you will be completing your interactions!

Three different times in your presentation you must have your audience interact with your media. How do you do this? Guide them to your media (as you see on this graph, when you watch this video clip, when you look at this image...) When do you do this? Whenever you want, but it must be in your presentation somewhere! Media Interactions

Remember: All of your opportunities will be the topic area of your presentation: Introduction, History, Extent, Repercussions, Solution, or Conclusion! The nature of the interaction is what you plan on actually doing!

Here is an example – this is what yours should look like when you turn it in on the day you present! Note – I was a little wordy with my interactions. You just need to put what you are doing. With the media interactions put what you are doing AND the type of media you are embedding.

You don’t have to highlight the media – I just did so you could see it! People often forget to do this side!

So you are able to engage the audience and not just stand up and speed read your notes! You are the expert on your topic and you need to share your issue with us and make us really care! Also, these interactions ensure your media doesn’t sit idly by and not get any attention! Why all the interactions?

I know the planning sheet can be confusing so we can talk about this closer to the presentations!

PSA REQUIREMENT One of your presentation requirements is a PSA – a Public Service Announcement. The PSA will be directed to your peers, what can they do right now to help stop whatever your issue is?! This will address your band aid solution! (I will show you some examples tomorrow!)

o Address your topic, problem, and band aid solution o Your audience is your peers! (other teenagers!) o You want to demand immediate attention! o Evoke emotion! Make them understand why it is so critical they support your cause! o It is a short amount of time, but it still must be purposeful! Consider weaving in the appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos! o Needs to address the who, what, where, when, why, and how – people need to have a specific action to take. o I would use Animoto for this! Or you can just make it a specific section of your iMovie. o Remember that this does need to be placed in the Solution 1 (Band Aid) portion of your presentation. Must be a minimum of thirty seconds – max 45 seconds. A few steps to Creating a STRONG and EFFECTIVE PSA – Public Service Announcement

Here is how you will be scored:

So when are these presentations? MARCH MONDAYTUESDAYWEDNESDAYTHURSDAYFRIDAY 2 Midterm Prep 3 Midterm Exam 4 MultiMedia Presentations 5 Intro to Hamlet 6 MultiMedia Presentations 9 MultiMedia Presentations 10 Hamlet 11 Vocab Quiz Lessons 9-12 12 MultiMedia Presentations 13 Half Day Hamlet Sign ups are tomorrow in class!

o If your video has ads or loading issues those are part of your time. o You must create your PSA - it cannot be a PSA you found online. o If you are not using your iPad, you don’t have much set up time – so you won’t be able to log in to a bunch of sites – you need to have everything ready to go on your jump drive. You will have one minute to set up if you are using my laptop for your presentation. o Don’t get lost in video clips! That time is going to go by much quicker than you think! o Be careful of interactions! Don’t lose time there either! o You cannot double dip your interactions! Here are some general tips and hints:

o You must have your MultiMedia Planning Sheet ready to go for me! You will hand that to me before you present! o Think about your presentation skills too! Don’t chew gum, sit on the table, etc. o BTW - You do NOT have to dress up for this presentation. o Watch your font size on anything you have in your presentation. You want it to be easy to see from all areas of the room! o Your final thought isn't a conclusion - it is a QUICK opportunity for you to say what you think about your topic - not what has to be done, what you think! :) o Be sure you have access to all links while on campus! Here are some general tips and hints:

o For your planning sheet - be specific! For the Opportunity you are telling me where in your presentation: Intro, History, Extent, Repercussions, Solution, Conclusion, or PSA. For your Nature of the Interaction you are telling me what you are doing - be specific! Don't say: Question. Tell me the question you are going to ask! o Remember that your PSA is your Band Aid solution - you are giving the class an action that you want them to go out and do! So it should have some time of action you want them to take right away. o Be sure in your Media opportunities on your planning sheet you have identified the different medias I will be reviewing! Here are some general tips and hints:

o Remember that you are going to talk much faster than you do when you practice. I urge you to put the entire presentation together in iMovie. o If you use a Prezi, please don't just read the text of your prezi! :) o Be sure that you are not forgetting your interactions! You can actually put the questions or whatever you are doing right in your prezi to help you remember! Here are some general tips and hints:

Don’t be stressed! You will have ALL the content – and you are an EXPERT on the subject! You just have to creatively decide how to share this with our class!
