KNOWWANT TO KNOWLEARNED TODAY

In subject matter learning we overlook the role of language as a medium of learning, and in language learning we overlook the fact that content is being communicated. Mohan, 1986

 CLIL is an approach in which a foreign language is used as a tool in the learning of a nonlanguage subject in which both language and the subject have a joint role.’ (Marsh in Coyle, 2006).  Language (usually L2) as the means of communicating in a subject area. Content and language, learned at the same time!

 Content-Based Instruction  English Across the Curriculum  Bilingual Education  Theme-based instruction Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become the umbrella term describing both learning another (content) subject such as physics or geography through the medium of a foreign language and learning a foreign language by studying a content-based subject. Darn, Steve (2006). Content and Language Integrated Learning. British Council | BBC. Retrieved from http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk.http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk

 The target language (English) is used to give instruction of content.  The instruction of engaging, theme-related content increases student motivation to learn the language.  CLIL instruction is meant to be long-term, which coresponds naturally with the research-based proposition that language is usually acquired over a period of 5-7 years.  Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) is the focus of instruction.  Fluency is emphasized over accuracy. Errors are viewed as a natural part of the learning process. Darn, Steve (2006). Content and Language Integrated Learning. British Council | BBC. Retrieved from http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk.http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk

 Seeks to engage and challenge students with broad concepts of knowledge  Improves levels of competence for English for Specific Purposes (ESP)  Helps students to develop skills for professional and post-secondary life  Helps students to develop critical thinking skills in the target language  Prepares students for international prospects Darn, Steve (2006). Content and Language Integrated Learning. British Council | BBC. Retrieved from http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk.http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk

 On some level, our schools have to be prepared to accept this method of teaching and begin supporting it.  On the other hand, it is possible to incorporate some principles of CLIL in small ways that do not require major systemic changes.

 Content – Acquiring and learning knowledge of subjects/content  Communication – Using language to learn and learning to use language simultaneously  Cognition – Developing critical thinking skills in both languages about concrete and abstract ideas  Culture – Getting exposure to other cultures and ways of thinking to deepen and broaden perspectives in all subject areas Darn, Steve (2006). 11 1. Facilitator will read CLIL lesson plan aloud 2. Participants will analyze the lesson plan, discussing the answers to these questions and sharing with the whole group: 1.What were the content objectives? 2.What were the language objectives? 3.What were the activities in the lessons? 4.How would students be assessed?

Work in pairs to answer the two questions below. You will present your ideas to the class. 1.What did you like about the lesson? What would you repeat or use in your class? 2.What did you dislike about the lesson (what could be improved)? 3.What questions do you have about the lesson? What clarification do you need?

 Work in groups of 2-4.  Using the blank lesson plan given and the model as your guide, design a lesson plan that incorporates the ideas and principles of CLIL.  Each group will come to the front and present their ideas. The ideas will be compiled and put on my blog, elfellow.wordpress.com!  Thanks for your participation!
