4. The Book of Proverbs Chapter 5 Introduction and Outline. “Avoid the Adulterer”

5. I. Introduction: The 11th and 12th lessons to the son(s). Verses 1-6 and 7-23.

6. This theme was first given to us in Chapter 2:16-19; and is reiterated and expanded upon in chapters 6:20-29, 32-35; 7:6-27; and 9:1-6, 13-18.

7. This chapter advocates staying away from another man’s unchaste woman, vs. 8; as well as devotion and intimacy with your own wife, vs. 15.

8. The foolish son will have regret that he rejected the teaching, vs. 12-13; and sinners die for lack of instruction and stubborn insolence against wisdom, vs. 23.

9. Even though we have a literal warning to stay away from the adulteress, we also have the application of false doctrines from a false preacher.

10. As Jesus Christ is our right man and we are betrothed to Him, Satan as an adulteress will try to persuade us to get in bed with his cosmic system and leave our right man behind.

11. II. Chapter 5 Outline. This chapter consists of an Introduction vs. 1-6, the Lesson vs. 7-20, and the Conclusion vs. 21-23.

12. 1. The typical introductory address and call for attentiveness in learning God’s Word, 5:1-2.

13. 2. The motivating reasons for heeding Bible Doctrine in verses 3-6.

14. 2. The motivating reasons for heeding Bible Doctrine in verses 3-6. 3. The consequences of adultery in verses 7-14.

15. 4. The exhortation for faithfulness in marriage, verses 15-20.

16. 5. The ever-present warning of Prov 1-9 that to choose folly is to choose death, verses 21-23.

17. III. Proverbs 5:1-2, Exhortation to be Occupied with Wisdom: our Lord Jesus Christ.

18. Prov 5:1, “Give attention”, QASHAB and “incline”, NATAH - Hiphil Imperatives. The command to learn Bible Doctrine. Cf. Prov 2:2; 4:20

19. This is accomplished through the GAP, (the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit), coupled with your objectivity and positive volition to give the Word of God a hearing.

20. “Receive Wisdom”, the mental aspect of knowledge. “Understanding”, the application side of that knowledge.

21. Prov 5:2, Two familiar words for guarding and protecting or keeping, SHAMAR, “keep” NATZAR, “watch.”

22. God’s Word protects you from the lustful desires of sexual immorality.

23. We are to have discretion regarding our words. The wise do not speak rashly but consider the consequences. They speak judiciously, not impulsively.

24. The adulteress is very flattering. Yet the student is exhorted to keep it straight, have discretion, Cf. Prov 1:4; 2:11; 3:21, and not get caught up in any form of flattery like others do.
