2 Quick Write: Free Write Friday In your composition notebook, write about whatever you want. What’s on your mind?

3 Objective, Agenda, & Homework Objective: Students will identify the themes and how characters develop in “The Lottery.” Agenda: ▫Quick Write ▫Greek Roots  Quiz & New Roots 57-59 ▫“The Lottery”  Character Charts Homework: ▫Study your Greek roots, and read your choice book. ▫Turn in final drafts of letter, bibliography, and outline.

4 You will have a quiz over Greek roots 1- 56, with particular emphasis on #54-56. Please put away your composition notebook, flash cards, etc. You will have about 5 minutes. Once you complete the quiz, turn it over and read your choice reading book. Please stay quiet until everyone is finished. Greek Roots Quiz

8 Community Come up and get a highlighter for your “Community” color. Go back through the text with a partner. With your highlighter, put a star next to each example your find of community. Look for the following: ▫Examples of the village, villagers, or groups of villagers as a community ▫Examples of the family community

9 Character Charts Make 4 charts in your notebook with 2 columns each. ▫Column 1: words and/or actions ▫Column 2: conclusion Label each charts as follows: ▫Tessie Hutchinson—finish as homework! ▫Old Man Warner ▫Mr. Joe Summers ▫Villagers (groups within the community) Complete the charts by filling in words and actions that you think are significant and by drawing conclusions about each of the characters.

10 Example Chart: Old Man Warner Words/ActionsConclusion 1.He is the oldest man in town (¶ 5). 2.He thinks giving up the lottery is crazy. They will go back to living in caves if they give it up (¶ 33). 3.He leads the crowd and tells everyone to “come on” and stone Tessie (¶ 79). 1.He has been lucky to survive the lottery 77 times. 2.He represents the traditions in the community. He is afraid to leave tradition behind. 3.He is a leader in the community and makes everyone believe that it is okay to participate in barbaric violence for the sake of tradition.
