2 Lesson 2A Write plural nouns as singular Lamps = Cups = Birds = ASL does have a few plural signs People and Children Do not simply look for nouns ending in –s Irregular nouns Reduplication shows plurality Sheep Mice

3 Lesson 2A If a noun has quantifying adjectives, such as numbers or words like ‘many’ or ‘few’ the noun is automatically understood to be plural. 5 dogs 5 DOG Many books MANY BOOK A general rule – nouns drop their suffixes -ness, -ment, -ity, -tion Examples: Colorblindness affects many people Accomplishment is a wonderful feeling.

5 Things to Remember Adverbs drop –ly Quietly = Gerunds Root word followed by ITSELF Skating requires practice. Possessive nouns Singular - usually has “apostrophe – s” Drop the suffix and add the possessive pronouns HIS/HERS/ITS Plural – usually has “-s apostrophe” Drop the suffix and add the possessive pronoun THEIR My cousin’s dog.

6 Things to Remember Modified Nouns Nouns that are changed by being described with adjectives The descriptor follows the noun Example: His green car. Compound words Glossed the same way One concept, but two signs Doghouse DOG HOUSE Person Marker Sometimes the English word does not appear in the gloss Student LEARN + PERSON MARKER

7 Things to Remember Word that have their own sign Lovely = Lately = Every Night = Some nouns should not be simplified. Signs represent concepts Vacation = HOLIDAY Vacate = TO LEAVE or EMPTY Employment = WORK Employ = UTILIZE
