2 What events led to the battle of Antietam  The battle began on September 17.  The Union began an artillery barrage on the center of the Confederates' position  Northern soldiers then advanced towards the Confederates' left flank  As the Federals crossed a cornfield, Confederate infantry rose up and surprised the Northerners  McClellan ordered his infantry to withdraw and directed the Northern artillery to fire on the cornfield

3 When/Where did this battle occur? September 17, 1862 Near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam creek As part of the Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil.

4 Was this battle considered to be a major turning point in the war?  Yes, it was one major turning point in the war  It ended Robert E Lee’s invasion in Maryland  They barely escaped the battle without defeat.

6 What were the primary objectives of the battle?  Union Army  Protect the capital  Robert E lee (The confederate side)  To recruit troops so they could win the war

7 How the battle affected the lives of civilians in the area?  Everybody was dedicated to helping the soldiers  Provided  food  Shelter  Health/medical help  They would amputate the appendages and throw them out like old garbage  It was a bloody time and everyone had a job to do

8 The new weapons were used in this battle  Mostly single fire guns such as muskets  1842 Springfield (Sniper rifle)  Enfield Rifle  Richmond Musket  Sharps Rifle  Springfield Rifle-Musket

9 How did Bloody Lane earn its name?  The North Carolina, held the Confederate right flank.  The Mississippians flowed into and through the lane in a counter attack only to be badly mauled by the newly arrived Irish Brigade  The Irish Brigade filled the void left by West Virginia and stabilized the union left flank  At this point it became a contest of attrition and the Confederate position began to earn it’s dreadful name - “Bloody Lane.”
