1 Miss Quinn’s Owl Hoots September 4,2015 Contact Info: 765-749-7647 (personal number) squinn@cowan.k12.in.us Cowan website: cowan.k12.in.us squinn@cowan.k12.in.us Next week’s Poem of the Week: One Two Buckle My Shoe Congratulations to: Reagan, Aubrey, Jaxon, Kynlee, Abel, Rayne, Keira, Maddy, Camdon, Aidan, Ariana, Kallie, Dalton, Cayden, Dominic, William, Jay, Delaney, Epic, Kaidance, and Abel for memorizing this week’s poem! Our whole class memorized the poem this week, so I will bring a special treat next week! Letters of the Week: V, W, X, Y, and Z Monday, September 7 – Labor Day – No School! Thursday, October 1 – Skating Party Friday, October 2 – Field trip to Fire Station Your child receives a gold strip for memorizing their lunch numbers. Please work with your child to memorize their lunch number as soon as possible. This makes lunch time easier for both the student and the teachers! We enjoyed welcoming and getting to know a new friend in our class this week, Cayden Best! Cayden has been a great addition to our class! We will now have 21 students in our class. To encourage families to check out our website weekly, I have added a secret word to the website. Check it each week and have your child tell it to me to earn extra golden strips! If you are having trouble accessing the website, please let me know. In addition, if you would like a paper copy of the poem sent home each week, please let me know that as well! Reading homework began this week. Please make sure you are reading with your child each night and logging the books on the log sheet in the book pocket of the BEE binder. If you miss a night, you can make it up on a different night. There is no homework on Friday’s, so weekends make a great time to catch up on reading you missed throughout the week. Once children start bringing home books that they will read to you, it will become very important that you make reading homework a priority EVERY NIGHT. Things to work on at home: Writing/recognizing our name. Writing/recognizing all numbers and letters. Not calling out for your attention. Color words This week we continued working on main idea and details using our reading series. We also talked about differences and what makes all of us special and unique. On Tuesday, we did a really cool science lesson on germs, using glitter to show how easily we spread and contract germs. Ask your child what we did for this experiment! In math, we worked on graphing. Next week in math, we will begin working on reading, writing, and counting numbers 1-5. In reading, we will continue to work on Main Idea and details, while using books about safety and rules as our theme. Many students are struggling with writing letters. I have added a page to the resources section of the binder to show you how to correctly write letters using D’nealian handwriting. Please be practicing letter writing at home! This week’s secret word is: reading. Next week we will also begin reading groups. We will be working on title page, what a letter, word, and sentence are, tracking with our finger as we read, and looking for picture clues. Next week, I am adding a letter recognition paper to the BEE binder. The paper will change each month. Practice this paper for 1 minute each night. The goal is to increase recognition, fluency, and the amount of letters recognized each day. When a child surpasses their last record, place the date above the letter. Have a great weekend!
