Industrial Energy Consumption.Anna Martin. 24 th February 2005

Current Industrial Energy Consumption Industrial energy consumption accounted for more than a fifth of all UK energy consumption in 2003. 34,634 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent were consumed in 2003 (1593 PJ). That’s a 4% decrease since 2001. In 2003, the largest sub-sector was the chemicals industry accounting for 22% of all industrial energy consumption.

Main industrial sub-sector groups 2. Chemicals 3. Metal products, machinery and equipment 4. Food, beverages and tobacco. 6. Other industries 5. Paper, printing and publishing 7. Unclassified i.e. Renewables and waste 1. Iron and steel and non-ferrous metals

Total Industrial Energy Consumption, 1970 to 2003 - 44% since 1970, - 10% since 1990. + 4% 1996 to 2001, but back to - 3% 2001 to 2003.

Industrial Energy Consumption by Sub- Sector, 1996 to 2003 Overall, + 17% increase in Chemicals. 58% decrease in Iron and Steel.

43% decrease in mineral products.

Industrial Energy Consumption by Sub-Sector, 2003. Recent - 5% decrease in Chemical Industry (2001 to 2003).

Distribution of Energy Consumption by Fuel, 1970 to 2003. 74% decrease in OIL, 87% increase in GAS.

Sector Consumption Predictions 2025 491 PJ 1 PJ 16% increase in publishing, 23% decrease in food.

Energy Consumption by Fuel Predictions 2025 98% decrease in OIL, 12% increase in GAS since 2003. 782 PJ

Total Consumption Prediction 1394 PJ

Total Energy Consumption Predictions 2030 1820 PJ 1618 PJ 1355 PJ

Conclusions 1394 PJ of energy required by 2030 if current trends continue. If see increase in renewable energies i.e wind power, then industrial energy consumption will considerably increase. (1820 PJ) Future reduction in energy intensity depends upon the structure, efficiency and technologies used.
