1 Business Systems Analysis of Buckman’s Ski Shops, Inc. Rebecca Eames Sponsor: Dr. William R. Eddins Department of Business Administration, York College of Pennsylvania Introduction For this project we evaluated the business needs of a Pennsylvania based company, Buckman’s Ski Shops, Incorporated. Based on a prepared case study we analyzed the current and future technological needs for the organization. We prepared four feasible options with varying cost and complexity. Our poster will include the various requirements the business presented along with illustrating all four alternatives and various models for reaching the recommended solution. Problems Inconsistent technology Inconsistent building design Theft (internal/external) Unknowledgeable management Opportunities Streamline technology Install surveillance equipment Education Business Objectives Reduce costs and losses Increase inventory count efficiency Better communication between stores Increase item availability Increase customer satisfaction Technical Objectives Develop IT/management relations Create and maintain a connection to the central office Video surveillance over the intranet Implementation of streamlined POS system Achieve standard platform, hardware, and software Cost-Benefit Analysis of Alternative Four (all costs are estimates) Hardware: 3Com ASDL router: $150 3Com Wireless access point: $125 3Com WLAN repeater: $100 (each) 3com WLAN NIC: $100 (each) Toshiba WLAN camera: $600 (each) Server computer: $4000 POS computer: $2500 (each) Software: Surveillance monitoring software: included with each camera Windows 2003 Server w/ 5 licenses: included with server MySQL Database: $2500 Wireless Network Survey: $1500 WAN Installation and Setup: $200 Ongoing Costs of Operation: Additional IT part-time staff support: $3,000/year ADSL WAN connection: $130/month (Verizon) Evaluation Matrices Alternatives One - Implement a consistent computer system chain wide. Two - Knock down walls to increase security. Three - Install surveillance cameras. Four - Combine alternatives one and three. Recommendation Alternative Four Rationale Implementing this alternative will satisfy the two primary needs outlined by Buckman. It will allow for a relatively quick way of implementing an improved inventory system at the Reading location while facilitating the need for direct and accessible surveillance. The inventory system itself will still conform to the same system that all of the other stores use so there should be no incompatibility issues. A wireless network will allow this system to be implemented quickly and easily with little or no need to change building structure or layout. It will also allow for a great deal of flexibility in placing the surveillance cameras. Details the ongoing costs of the recommendation over the next five fiscal years. Various criteria identified for the business and then rated on their importance to the business process. The alternative with the highest total value is the most beneficial to the organization. The entire analysis phase is currently posted and the design phase will be posted before the end of the semester. Reference Material Used Satzinger, John W.
