New France Allies

n Champlain allied himself with the Native Peoples because he needed help with the fur trade, exploration, and survival skills.

n The two tribes closest to the Habitation were the Algonkin and the Montagnais who themselves were allied with the Huron.

n Unfortunately, the Huron were currently in the middle of a war with another tribe called the Iroquois.

n The Huron told the French that, in order to remain allies, they would have to help them fight the Iroquois.

n Champlain had no choice. He led the French in an attack against the Iroquois and easily defeated them using their arquebuses.

n Afterwards, the Iroquois became bitter enemies of the French (and turn to the British for trade and support).
