Certified Hazardous Materials Manager Credential program established by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) in 1984 Goals of the program are to: – Provide credentialed recognition to hazardous materials professionals with specific levels of education, experience and competence – Identify qualified hazardous materials managers to government, industry and academia – Foster continued professional development of CHMMs – Facilitate the transfer of knowledge and experience – Website: http//www.achmm.org

Institute of Hazardous Materials Management Non-profit corporation founded in 1984 Office of record for CHMM program and dedicated to upgrading professional practice Established to address regulatory provisions that work be performed by qualified individuals Credentialing, not membership organization Function is to certify, test, and recertify CHMMs Accredited by the Council on Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) Mandatory code of professional ethics Website: http://www.ihmm.org

Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers Non-profit membership organization founded in 1985 Dedicated to fostering recognition/professional development through – continuing education, peer group interaction, and exchange of ideas/information – Comprised of over 68 chapters in 39 states nationally and over 10,000 certified professionals – Sponsors annual national conference with technical sessions on hazardous materials profession – Website: http://www.achmm.org

Identifies the professionals qualified to protect the public’s environmental, health and safety Enhances the professionalism of the environmental workforce Levels the psychological playing field between the regulators and the regulated community Presence of qualified people often mitigates environmental violations Limit insurance liability of organizations who employ skilled and knowledgeable professionals

12 Why the CHMM credential? Accredited by the Council on Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) – Members include the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, American Board of Engineering Technology and National Society of Professional Engineers Recognized by numerous Federal agencies and U.S. Corporations – DOE, DOD, EPA, FDIC, Army Corps of Engineers, State Department – The Boeing Company, Rust Environment, TRW, General Motors Registrar Accreditation Board (ISO 14000) – Has recognized the CHMM credential; will give special consideration to CHMMs that submit an application for EMS Auditor certification (automatically meet the relevant workplace experience req’s & are granted a default of 15 hrs/yr.. of required professional development to maintain)

Examination: applicant is pre-approved by IHMM to sit for certification testing based upon established education and/or experience criteria Proctored 3 hour, closed-book,152 question test Question pool categories - 25% Laws & Regulations, 35% Science & Technology, 40% Management Principles & Practical Application IHMM pass/fail ratio (70%) ACHMM national overview course designed to support applicants sitting for the CHMM national certification examination

14 Who are CHMM’s? Demonstrate an appropriate education background and specific work experience – Apply to IHMM 6 weeks prior to exam Have an acceptable score (~70% pass-fail) on a professionally-prepared, closed-book exam: – Regulatory Compliance – Science & Technology – Environmental Management Maintain proficiency – Meet recertification requirements [participate in professional development, document 17 CMPs (certification maintenance points) every 5 years] – Continuing education (at least 20 hours/per year) Uphold an enforced ethical code

15 Where are CHMM’s? > 10,000 professionals certified in U.S. 36 different baccalaureate degrees satisfy education requirement, including chemistry, biology, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, etc. Employment profiles include consulting, waste management, chemical processing, metals, petroleum, colleges and universities, and Federal, state and local government agencies Belong to one of 68+ chapters of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) Approximately 6,000 certified individuals belong to the ACHMM, the professional membership society of the CHMM program
