June 19 th Readers: John Meighan Bill Montgomery George Goodloe Project SOS Executive Director, Dr. Pam Mullarkey, and two SOS mentors, Jeremy Spellman and Ashley Patton, spoke to our club about Project SOS (Strengthening Our Students). Project SOS is committed to positively changing today's youth culture by teaching life skills to avoid premarital sex, drugs, alcohol, and other high risk behaviors. College age young adults provide students with education/entertainment “edutainment” programs that include health facts, personal testimonies, music, demonstrations and drama. Programs are followed up in many of the schools with bi-monthly mentoring clubs led by recent college graduates that are committed to avoiding unhealthy choices and helping teens stay focused on their goals. Thank you Dr. Mullarkey, Ashley, and Jeremy for your informative presentation. His mother was divorced and unable to care for him. The Detroit Kiwanis club adopted him, found a foster home to raise him, and gave him the name of Walter Kiwanis. The club paid for all his expenses until his mother was remarried and again assumed parental status with Walter. The experience set the pattern of future Kiwanis work with underprivileged children.
