Test Info! Study: –Earth as System notes Questions at end (including “Which source of energy powers the following? Essay! Explain why sun shines!! (Nuclear fusion…in notes) What is energy? What are the 3 sources of energy for the Earth system? What would happen if there were no energy? Give an example of energy flowing. –Reading guide questions (1-5, 11-13, 18-25, 27 ) Really you could study the whole thing –Matter, Energy, and Earth as a System Worksheet Identify matter & energy in things Explain path energy took from source –Sphere interaction activity sheet Identify sphere interactions NEED WIPE BOARDS FOR THIS JEOPARDY!! AND ALL JEOPARDIES!!

Today you are going to… play Jeopardy! So you can… review for the test You’ll know you’ve got it when you know the answers to the Jeopardy questions

Choose a category. You will be given the answer. You must give the correct question. Click to begin.

Spheres & Another Question Other The 5 th Category 10 Point 20 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points 10 Point 20 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points Energy Vocabulary & a Cycle

Anything that has mass and takes up space

What is matter?

The ability to do work or make something happen

What is energy? Bang Bang

Trace the energy in a running cheetah back to its source.

What ?

This is a group of interacting parts that form a whole.

What is a system?

This is the definition for albedo.

What is “the percentage of sunlight reflected by a surface”?

This sphere consists of all water in the Earth system.

What is the hydrosphere?

Lightning causes a forest fire. What spheres are interacting? (Explain)

The atmosphere (lightning) is affecting the biosphere (forest).

Give an example of how the biosphere affects the atmosphere

What is “Animals breath in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.”?

Explain how a tsunami could affect all 4 spheres.

Original answer

Animals in “_______ ___ communities” do not rely on sunlight for their energy. Instead they use heat energy from Earth’s interior.

What are hydrothermal vent communities?

Which of Earth’s energy sources provides the least amount of Earth’s energy budget?

What is tidal?

Ocean waves are powered by this energy source.

What is solar?

These 3 factors create Earth’s tides.

What is gravity of the sun, gravity of the moon, and Earth’s rotation?

Identify 3 types of energy present in burning alcohol.

What are light, heat, and chemical potential energy?

Trace the energy in the motion of a gasoline powered car back to the sun.

Car Moving (K)  Gas (CP)  dead animals (CP)  plants (CP)  Sun (EM)

Earth’s equator has a circumference of about…

What is 25,000 mi (40,000 km)?

Give an example of something with high albedo.

What is snow?

It would take about this many hours to fly around Earth in a standard commercial airline.

What are 45?

It would take this long to drive around Earth’s equator at 60 mph.

What is 17 days?

Trace the energy in this computer back to its source. (6 steps)

What radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x- rays, gamma rays?

List 3 matters & 4 energies in a talking student. Explain the energies.

Matter – head, arms, feet Energy – sound (talking) heat (they’re warm) Kinetic (mouth is moving) chem. poten. (could be eaten or burned) Infrared (radiating heat)

This source of energy powers tsunamis.

What is geothermal?

This source of energy powers waves.

What is solar?

These are the two reasons Earth is hot inside.

What are radioactive isotopes decaying and heat leftover from formation?

List 2 matters & 2 energies in a book sitting on the top shelf in this room. Explain the energies.

Matter – pages, cover Energy – Gravitational poten. (can fall) chem. poten. (could be eaten or burned) heat (It’s not at absolute zero.) Infrared (radiating heat)

Make your wager

Explain why the sun shines. 1.Give the name of the process 2.identify where it happens 3.the conditions that cause it to happen 4.identify what’s turning into what 5.how long it takes energy get to the surface 6.how long it takes to get to Earth

The sun shines because of a process called nuclear fusion. Extreme heat & pressure in center of sun pushes hydrogen atoms together. The hydrogen atoms combine to form helium atoms & energy. After a million years or so, the energy reaches the surface of the sun From there, it takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth’s surface.
