3. United Nations
An organisation which aims to find peaceful solutions to conflicts, and promote global cooperation and human rights.

4. The History of the UN
The UN was formed after the First World War to promote peace and co-operation between countries.
The UN was originally called the League of Nations.
The UN attempts to:
Prevent wars wherever possible
Develop friendly relations between countries
Get international co-operation in solving international issues, such as refugees and asylum seekers
Promote the respect of basic human rights in all countries
Promote freedom for all.

5. Human Rights
In 1948 the UN published the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The aim was to lay down the minimum rights for every person in every country in the world.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights contains 30 specific sections called articles.
The UN has few powers to force countries to stick to all of the articles.
The articles have however made a difference in many parts of the world.
