1 United Nations I will: Understand the history and purpose of the United Nations. Know the main Human Rights defined by the United Nations. Complete a group activity to enable me to reflect upon Human Rights in terms of wants and needs.

3 United Nations An organisation which aims to find peaceful solutions to conflicts, and promote global cooperation and human rights.

4 The History of the UN The UN was formed after the First World War to promote peace and co-operation between countries. The UN was originally called the League of Nations. The UN attempts to: Prevent wars wherever possible Develop friendly relations between countries Get international co-operation in solving international issues, such as refugees and asylum seekers Promote the respect of basic human rights in all countries Promote freedom for all.

5 Human Rights In 1948 the UN published the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The aim was to lay down the minimum rights for every person in every country in the world. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights contains 30 specific sections called articles. The UN has few powers to force countries to stick to all of the articles. The articles have however made a difference in many parts of the world.

6 Human Rights This article states that ?
Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Article 4: Everyone has the right to freedom form slavery. Article 9: No one shall be arrested, detained or exiled without good reason. Article 11: Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Article 19: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. Article 23: Everyone has the right to work. Article 26: Everyone has the right to a free education. 7 Wants and Needs

8 Scenario 1 You and your group have been elected as government.
You can only provide the members of your country with 12 of the items on the cards. You must choose the 12 most important.

9 Scenario 2 Your funding has been cut.
You can now only provide 8 of the items on the cards. You must choose the 8 most important.

10 Scenario 3 Due to unforeseen circumstances your funding has now been cut again. You can now only provide 4 of the items on the cards. You must choose the four most important.
