6 Exam information You will follow the AQA syllabus The course is made up of 2 parts Learning objectives Understand what will be covered in GCSE Food What is expected of you throughout the course How to plan your practical work correctly Written examination Unit 1 (45451) 40% of your total marks 2 hours 120 marks You answer all of the questions in both sections You will be give ‘pre-release’ material before the exam which will give you some focus for revision.

7 Exam information Learning objectives Understand what will be covered in GCSE Food What is expected of you throughout the course How to plan your practical work correctly Design and making –practice Unit 2 (45452) 60% of your total marks Approximately 45 hours 90 marks Consists of a single design and make activity from a range of board set tasks.

8 What will you be doing in Year 10? The practical work Everything that we do in Year 10 is preparation towards your written examination and coursework. You will plan and undertake a range of practical tasks - sweet, savoury, individually, in groups and part practical's (to compare ingredients for example). You will learn how to use a number of decorative techniques, how to use the same basic recipe for a range of dishes and why it is important to break down a dish into it component parts. 9 The theory You need to start to learn how ingredients work in different dishes the chemical reactions that occur throughout the cooking process how you can adapt recipes and why you might need to different dietary needs how to have a balanced daily diet and why this is important to a healthy lifestyle. 10 How can I succeed? By always trying your best both in class and with your homework. By meeting deadlines and never settling for ‘that’ll do!’ Learn it, plan it, cook it, adapt it, apply it! 11 What do I need to bring to every lesson? My planner, pencil, pen, coloured pencils and ruler My apron (or 20p) Any homework set Any ingredients (or money) needed for that lesson My theory book My recipe book An A4 plastic sleeve to keep my recipe book clean when cooking A ‘can-do’ attitude! 12 What is your first task? You will have 1 hour to cook any practical dish you wish (within reason) You choose what you want to cook. You MUST plan it correctly. This can be sweet or savoury. You cannot deep-fry anything. Use this lesson to show what you can do. You will be marked on your planning (which will be checked during the practical), your work throughout the practical and the look of the end product. You will need to provide all the ingredients – remember, school is not a shop! GOOD LUCK!
