1 Go Orange at the Zoo Information and guidance for teachers for your visit Last updated: June 2014 Young Orangutan – inquisitive minds at Chester Zoo Whether your school is already involved with the Go Orange campaign, or you’d like to find out how to get involved, our Go Orange activities and workshops are here to help you find the information you need. Our Discovery and Learning team has been working hard to bring you the latest information about these amazing animals.

2 Zoo activities Zoo Rangers in the Realm of the Red Ape Our fun and lively Zoo Ranger team will be on hand every day over October with lots of Orangutan activities and animal talks out in the Zoo. If you see them, make sure you stop and have a chat – they’re very friendly and they’re full of amazing facts. 3 Zoo Workshops Two of our Sumatran Orangutans, Emma and Inda We offer a wide range of interactive, curriculum- linked workshops at the Zoo. 4 Pre-visit ideas Two researchers collecting Orangutan data in Borneo The Orangutan story is great for curriculum- linked exploration. Whether you are a Key Stage 2 teacher or AS level there is something here for you. Geography, art, conservation, human-wildlife conflict, tourism, ecosystems and habitats are just some of the more obvious links. Before the visit, why not prep teams of students by giving them one aspect to research and share with the rest of the class, eg: Orangutan habitats and food What is Palm Oil? Orangutans in the pet trade Conservation status of Orangutans Amazing Orangutan facts

5 Post-visit ideas Example of deforestation in Borneo Here are some ideas for extending the learning potential of your visit a little further. When you get back to class… Why not find out what products you all buy that contain Palm Oil – start a school campaign (or make a display/write a play etc.), to raise more awareness of the everyday things that can make a difference. Using Google Earth, or similar programme, find some Palm Oil plantations and work out what area of forest is left in a given area. Using role-play, start a class debate. Roles could include Palm Oil plantation worker, plantation owner, conservationist, supermarket manager.

6 Post-visit ideas Palm Oil plantations and fragmented forest in Borneo Organise a class picnic – but only use Palm Oil free (or sustainable) products. Use this to explore issues of global culture and human impact. Eco-tourism ideas: How can local communities use tourism to earn a living in a way that will help Orangutans and their habitats? Look at other examples worldwide and come up with some ideas. Write a business plan. Write and illustrate a story for younger pupils about the life of an Orangutan, or a Palm Oil plantation worker etc. Get your class to make a Go Orange assembly – What issues will they raise? How persuasive will they be?

And they embraced it from head to toe with orange theme clothes, cake sales, 5k runs and the list goes on...
