5 KEY ELEMENTS: THE MINIMUM 1.A peer-to-peer poll 2.Poll follow-up activities: School intercom announcement Cafeteria Posters (Q & A) 3. One other activity from the RLAF menu 4. Distribution of at least one type of RLAF communication tool flyer, poster, table tent, stickers, bookmark

7 KEY ELEMENTS: SAMPLE ACTIVITY “SET YOUR RULES” Drivers use an online tool to select their in-car rules: 1)Wear your seatbelt 2)Don’t pressure me to speed 3)No drinking or drugs 4)Keep the music down 5)Keep your phone conversations short 6)No yelling Driver can select additional rules Help if I ask you to: 1)Answer my cell 2)Give me directions 3)Just chill

8 KEY ELEMENTS: EXAMPLE Reach the students in popular “hang-out” locations: Cafeteria table tents for lunchtime reading Library study areas Health classrooms

9 KEY ELEMENTS: EXAMPLE Sample Question: What is the most harmful thing passengers can do in a car? 1)Distract the driver 2)Be loud (talking, playing music, etc.) 3)Forget to wear seatbelts 4)Talk constantly on a cell phone 5)Pressure driver to speed 6)Act wild (like dancing or singing)

10 GAIN TEEN BUY-IN Let students lead the way Encourage them to look at RLAF web content Plans, activities and messages must be relatable to their peers Teens are the heart of the campaign

11 SHARED ACTION PLAN: TEENS TALK Conduct the “Friends Driving Friends” poll: Teens meet in the morning to pick up their clipboards and poll questions Students poll peers during lunch, in the hallway, at study hall or school events Team decides: How will poll results be announced/posted? Who will make morning announcements? What other activities should we do?

12 SHARED ACTION PLAN: TEENS TALK Students decide on materials: Which posters and flyers speak to our school? Do they represent our students? What other materials will work best for us? Do we want to design and create banners or t-shirts?

13 SHARED ACTION PLAN: TEENS LEAD Students do the real work and make decisions: How will we recruit our organizing team(s) How will we promote this? How will we turn our plans into action?

14 SHARED ACTION PLAN: ADVISORS OFFER SUPPORT Guide the group to resources including: Ideas for generating support and donations Templates for promotion (press releases, letters to editor)

15 GENERATE PEER EXCITEMENT Spring: Get the RLAF dates on the school calendar or add an “E-Countdown to RLAF Campaign” on the school web page. Summer: Keep the momentum going! Design an RLAF t-shirt for organizers and create posters “ RLAF- It’s Coming: 10/17/10” Fall: Have “Just Chill” stickers ready for the first day of school and back-to-school night. Make weekly RLAF announcements.
