Hazardous Waste Removal VEX Robotics Problem 3
2
Problem Design and build a remotely controlled robot that is capable of picking up a cylindrical hazardous waster container and transporting it to a disposal facility. Restrictions and Guidelines Your robot must pickup the container, transport it to the disposal box, lift the lid, deposit the container and then close the lid without any assistance. You may use all parts of your VEX kit and any other materials you feel necessary to complete the task.

Research Questions 1.What substances are typically considered hazardous materials (list at least 4 and be specific)? 2.Why are robots useful in these situations? 3.In order to use the SERVO motor module, which control setup do you feel is better, analogue (1-4) or digital (5-6)? Why? 4.Why is a MOTOR module not well-suited to delicate applications? 5.Explain the difference between tank and arcade style controls, making reference to the operation of the motors and direction. 6.The Sydney Tar ponds are a large toxic waste site in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. What caused this toxic mess?

Assessment You will complete a design brief and be assessed using the standard design rubric. Your ideas section must show your original idea, and any alterations with rationale explained Standard evaluation questions and life cycle analysis must be completed. YOU MUST TEST YOUR FINAL DESIGN BY FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27 REPORT DUE MONDAY NOVEMBER 30 2009 UPON COMPLETION, ALL MATERIALS MUST BE DISASSEMBLED AND RETURNED TO THEIR RESPECTIVE KITS.

Evaluation Questions 1.Did you solve the technological problem? How? 2.List 2 positive design features and 2 negative design features about your solution. 3.What engineering principle(s) or concepts did you learn from this technological challenge? 4.List differences between your original idea (working drawing) and your final solution? 5.What improvements or innovations would you make on your design to make it more reliable or successful?
