Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. 5 Step 1 Identify the problem Write down the original problem here. Student - Design, build and program a robot to: To build a robot as strong as possible and tug the opponent robot. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

6 Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1) drgraeme.com Site 2) mrcrokesrobotics.weebly.com What did you learn from your research? A) How build a strong robot to be able to tug another. B) Small gear must be the driver and a bigger gear must be the follower to make It slow but strong. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

7 Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below. 1.Gears: Small as driver, medium as follower! (Do it twice) 2.Brace the wheels well so that it doesn’t fall apart and it grabs the floor better. 3.Make it heavy as possible. It will be harder to move it.

8 Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response. Probably to make the Smaller gear the driver and the bigger gear as the follower so That its fast enough and powerful enough to pull the other robot And win. 9 The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment. Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your first prototype will look like. 1.Four wheel drive. 2.Wheels on side of the battery 3.Two motors (two wheels on each.) 4.Small gear as driver and bigger gear as follower. (Do this only two times.)

10 Step 5 Construct a prototype Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a computer program for your robot. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs.

11 1st Prototype picture and computer program Here is our fist prototype of our tug of war robot. It did terribly awful. The wheels on the side didn’t even tough the floor! To fix this we have to brace the side wheels. For gears we used a small as the driver and medium as the follower. We did this two times for every wheel. I hope we will be able to fix this and be the champion!!! Step 5 evidence

13 1 st modified prototype picture and computer program Step 6 evidence This robot was actually a little better! The wheels are on the ground now so it is tugging. But its SO weak! To fix this we will have to use a bigger gear ratio and make it more powerful. I hope this works so we can be the champs!

14 2 nd modified prototype picture and computer program Step 6 evidence This is our new robot. It is ok, but it always flips over! To fix this I can make the lower side the front. We also had a gear problem. We did a different pattern for the back by accident so one is fast than the other. This shouldn’t be too hard to fix…

15 3 rd modified prototype picture and computer program Our robot go a lot better than it used to be! We changed around the front and the back so it doesn’t flip over. And we fixed our gears up. Now our robot is ready to be victorious!

17 Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Stronger gears are better. The lower the better. The more gears the better.
