Microsoft Visio Design Plan Beverly Ashford 8/1/09 EDTC 3332 – Instructional Technology Practicum

Needs Assessment:  Teachers use time consuming drawing methods to create drawings, charts and diagrams to help support their lesson plans.  The finished drawings, charts and diagrams do not look professional and are often hard to read and comprehend.  Teachers need a software program to assist in creating diagrams and drawings in a timely manner with professional looking results.

Needs Assessment  Microsoft Visio will help the teachers save time and effort when creating instructional diagrams, charts and drawings.  Teachers need a training module on how to use Microsoft Visio to save time and create professional looking diagrams, charts and drawings.

Instructional Goal  After completing this training, teachers will know the different drawing tools Visio has to offer, the key terminology of Microsoft Visio, and will be able to use shapes and connectors to create a flowchart.

Performance Objectives After completing this training lesson, the learner will:  Correctly identify at least 3 types of diagrams that can be created in Microsoft Visio.  Correctly define 3 key words in Microsoft Visio.  Correctly identify the proper order of steps required to create a basic flowchart in Microsoft Visio.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes: Performance ObjectiveAssessment Correctly identify at least 3 types of diagrams that can be created in Microsoft Visio. Quiz question: Which of the following are types of diagrams you can make with Visio? Correctly define 3 key words in Microsoft Visio. Quiz questions: What is a Visio drawing page? What is a Visio stencil? What is a Visio template? Correctly identify the proper order of steps required to create a basic flowchart in Microsoft Visio. Quiz question: Which of the following is the correct order of steps to create a basic flowchart in Microsoft Visio?

Learner Characteristics:  The intended audience for this training module are school teachers from kindergarten to fifth grade.  The teachers have college degrees, are computer literate and have experience with Microsoft Windows, Word and PowerPoint.  The types of diagrams most often used in the teachers classrooms are flowcharts and graphs.

Learning Context:  The intended instructional setting for this online training module is the school computer lab.  The schools’ computers have the Visio software program.  Teachers will be scheduled in groups of five to take the training during the class day.  The web based lesson can be reviewed at any time on a computer with an internet connection.

Instructional Strategies:  Introduction: (a) Overview of Training (b) Statement of Goal and Objectives.  Topic 1 – Microsoft Visio (a) What is Microsoft Visio? (b) How can Visio be used? (c) Explain the types of diagrams which can be created with Visio.

Instructional Strategies: (cont.)  Topic 2 – Visio Terminology (a) Definition and picture of the drawing page. (b) Definition and picture of stencils (c) Definition and picture of templates.  Topic 3 – Steps to Create a Basic Flowchart (a) Selecting a template. (b) Dragging shapes to the drawing board. (c) Connecting the shapes. (d) Adding text to the shapes.

Instructional Strategies (cont.)  Summary (a) Review types of diagrams, key words and proper order of steps to create a flowchart.  Assessment (a) Quiz with multiple choice questions.

Instructional Resources:  Equipment and software required to participate in the training module include the following: Computer with minimum 133-megahertz or higher processor and 72 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM) Monitor supporting 640 x 480 or higher resolution Microsoft Windows 98 or later or Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 or later Microsoft Visio software Internet access

Training Module Blueprint: Start Overview of Microsoft Visio Goals and Objectives What is Microsoft Visio? Types of Visio Diagrams Steps to Create a Flowchart Summary Assessment End Microsoft Visio Key Words

Formative Evaluation:  Peer evaluation A fifth grade teacher will complete the training module and provide feedback on the effectiveness of the training and which areas need clarification or revision.  Small group evaluation A group of five kindergarten through fifth grade teachers will complete the training module and complete an assessment survey. The survey will rate the effectiveness of the training and provide feedback on how to improve the training design plan.

Summary  This Microsoft Visio web based training module will instruct teachers how to create drawings, charts and diagrams quicker and with professional looking results.  The instructional lesson includes an introduction to Microsoft Visio, the types of diagrams that can be created in Visio, definitions of key words used in Visio and the proper order of steps required to create a basic flowchart in Microsoft Visio.  The lesson concludes with an assessment quiz.  A peer evaluation and a small group evaluation will be conducted to measure the effectiveness of the training and to point out areas of the instruction which need clarification or revision.
