2 Grade 7 Reading: Unsolved Mysteries Research Project Today’s Objective Students will be able to explore, read, and use tools in DESTINY eBooks in order to build background knowledge, select a research topic, and gather information about an Unsolved Mystery.

3 eBooks in DESTINY eBook = electronic book – A book in digital format (not paper), readable on an electronic device (computer, tablet, smart-phone) Library eBooks are now available through our DESTINY Library Catalog – At school computers: Click DESTINY icon – Outside of school: Internet > http://destiny.bcps.orghttp://destiny.bcps.org

4 To read an eBook in DESTINY, you must have: 1.A device with an Internet Browser: – Devices: Computer, Tablet (iPad, Kindle, Nook), Smart Phone – Browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari 2.Internet service & connection: – Wired, WiFi, or 3G/4G plan 3.Your BCPS Username & Internal Password: – After opening DESTINY, you must LOGIN to DESTINY with your BCPS Username & Internal Password

5 Two types of eBooks in DESTINY: 1.Unlimited Simultaneous Access (USA) – Many students can check out and read the same eBook at the same time. 2. Single User Access – Only ONE student can check out and read the eBook at a time. Loan period for both types is 3 weeks. Books are Checked In (returned) automatically after 3 weeks. You can Check In the book early if you’re finished. DO NOT Check Out a Single User Access eBook (1 of 1 Available) unless you’re SURE you’re going to read it! – Once you’ve Checked Out, no one else can read it until it is Checked In.

6 1.Open DESTINY - Click DESTINY icon at school, go to destiny.bcps.org off-site.destiny.bcps.org 2.Login to DESTINY with your BCPS Username and Internal Password (click NO if you get a pop-up in school) 3.Under RESOURCE LISTS, click Search Lists and scroll down to the eBooks Lists  eBooks – Unsolved Mysteries To find eBooks in DESTINY:

7 1.Click on an eBook; it will open in Follett Shelf. 2.Press F11 key for full screen. 3.Preview and explore the eBook (skim and scan) to learn about topic(s). * DO NOT Check Out yet! 4.Try out the eBook tools listed on the attached Quick Reference Guide for Digital Reader – Online* 5.Press F11 again to CLOSE the eBook 6.Explore eBooks to help you select 3-4 topics that interest you most; teacher will assign topics/partners. *Note: Other Quick Reference Guide for Digital Reader – Text Flow is for devices without Flash (iPad/iPhone) To explore eBooks on the Unsolved Mysteries Resource List:

8 To Check Out an Unsolved Mysteries eBook: After your topic selection is approved: 1.Log into DESTINY with your Username and Internal Password. 2.Open an eBook on your topic from the eBooks – Unsolved Mysteries Resource List 3.Click Info or Bookbag icon 4.Click Check Out to read, listen, highlight, add notes and bookmarks.

9 To continue reading an eBook you have already Checked Out: 1.Log into DESTINY and click on My Info. Click on the eBook. 2.Continue reading, highlighting, adding notes. 3.Print Out your highlights/notes before the due date. 4.To Check In before the due date, click on your Bookbag and then click Return Early.
