iPad Cart Training: Classroom Management Monroe Middle School

Establishing Expectations Maverick Code Sounds Like Polite language (“May I see the iPad?”) On-task discussions Students helping each other (“I can show you...”) Silent when listening to instructions Focus is on task to complete assignment Equipment is handled with care and with appropriate use

Establishing Expectations Technology Agreement CUSD Network Agreement Individual Tech Agreement Use the tech agreement as an outline to remind students of the expectations when using the mobile devices. Remind students of the consequences of violating their agreements.

Establishing Expectations Logical Consequences Minor (Warning) Touching an iPad without permission Refusing to share Lose Privileges for the Day After one warning for above Using the camera without permission Opening applications without permission Major (Office Referral) Intentionally searching for inappropriate material Showing other students inappropriate material Intentionally harming iPads Inappropriate use of camera Physically abusing the technology Questions or Suggestions?

Establishing Expectations Digital Citizenship BrainPOP Video & Activities BrainPOP Video & Activities Common Sense Media Lessons Important when blogging (Kidblog), creating shared documents (Google Docs), using Padlet, etc.

Caring for the iPads Decide where students will place iPads when they’re not in use (e.g. placemat, foam, stand) No liquids or food on desks Clean hands Carry with both hands Use “Thank You” protocol when handing over to someone else Gently place the iPads on table, in cart, etc. Cleaning the screens: Use a soft cloth. If a cleaner is necessary, only use a safe screen cleaner designed for that purpose. No Chlorox wipes!

iPad Modifications There is a “wake” password. There is a different password to access restrictions - Students should NOT know this one. In settings, all settings, that can be, have been set to PG or 12+ The iTunes store has been disabled Installing/Deleting apps has been disabled Do not install any apps without first checking with Debbie or Brenda. All updates have been completed.

Assigning iPads Options Assign one device to each individual or pair (e.g. for projects) Students should use the same iPad each time. Record assigned usage in the Cart Log Book. Assign one device to each seat/pair of seats/team (e.g. for using iPads with multiple classes) Students should use the same iPad each time. Record assigned usage in the Cart Log Book. Note: After each class/activity, verify that all iPads have been returned to their dedicated location.

Assigning iPads Reporting Discrepancies: If an iPad is missing, don’t dismiss your class. Contact the principal. If an iPad is malfunctioning, first inform Debbie or Brenda. If they are unavailable, contact TechHelp. If an iPad is broken, report it to Debbie or Brenda, Dawnel and TechHelp. Record the circumstances of the breakage including students assigned to the ipad. If you report it to Tech help, please include a copy to Debbie/Brenda/Dawnel.

Cart Log Book Each cart has a sign-in/sign-out log for each time a student uses an iPad. This MUST be used. There is also a section for reporting problems with the iPads, so we can keep track of issues. Even if you resolve a problem, please log it. Use the post-its to mark the iPad with the issue.

Distribution & Collection Teacher Assign each student an iPad - that student will use and be responsible for that iPad for the trimester. Teacher collects iPads at the end of the period and makes sure they are properly stored (in numerical order) and plugged in. Visually verify that all iPads are accounted for prior to dismissing kids. Student Helpers Train 2-4 students (or ask Debbie/Brenda to train them!) Students can: Distribute iPads Collect iPads Place in cart in numerical order Handle basic troubleshooting issues - ONLY if trained. Note: Students should never use the power cord or power switch on the iPad cart.

Miscellaneous Management Suggestions If you allow “choice time” with the iPads (I don’t), specify which applications can be used. Working in pairs is ideal: Kids can help each other & it improves accountability Reserving a full cart & How to access the Lab Calendar

Getting to Know the iPads Wake up Sleep - Wake password (after 15 min. of no use) Power On/Off (rarely needed) Search Switch Open Apps Close Apps Screenshot Siri AirDrop & AirPlay Apple T.V. Force restart (holding home and power for 15 seconds) Quitting an unresponsive app (hold power button until slide to turn off appears, then hold down home button until app quits).

Tips and Tricks Create a free class website to post links your students will be using in class (e.g. Padlet, Weebly) Use Digital Classroom, GoodReader, & Google Drive for assigning and submitting work (please notify Debbie/Brenda if you are interested). Use Edmodo or Schoology for assigning quizzes, submitting assignments, etc. Use AirDrop to quickly share a file with other iPads.
