2 Program History WHS advocated for a high-quality orientation program that would address the needs of new members of the SES DMRD 974 mandated the program in 1992 Two-week course of study was launched in 1994  One week residential and one week travel to COCOMs  Focuses a spotlight on the outstanding performance of SES responsibilities, as defined by the ECQs  A unique general educational offering that highlights networking and peer learning

3 Program Objectives Establish jointness as the approach for interaction among the OSD, the military departments, Defense Agencies, DoD Field Activities and the private sector, thereby integrating SES responsibilities with DoD component priorities Operationalize the SES role in DoD Transformation Provide an overview of DoD structure and processes critical to its operation Provide experiences that expand participants’ leadership and strategic thinking skills in the DoD context Provide structured networking opportunities with military and civilian colleagues, to reinforce information sharing across functional areas

4 Expectations APEX is a unique executive education experience that highlights networking and peer learning It provides you, the newly appointed SES, the opportunity to reflect on your new duties and learn new tools for success The program is designed to assist you – the senior leader –to frame your responsibilities in light of DoD and component priorities APEX offers a blend of briefings from senior ranking DoD civilian and military leaders and opportunities for discussion and activities focusing on the themes of transformation and transition

5 Evaluations Daily and end of program evaluations It is important to turn these in daily so that your suggestions can immediately be incorporated Provide your written comments as this provides specific insight into how to improve the program, but please be sensitive to the fact that these evaluations are compiled and included in the end of program evaluation report which is distributed to all speakers and commands

6 Non-Attribution Policy APEX participants, staff members, and program facilitators are encouraged to freely discuss with speakers the opinions and views they express during their presentations Non-attribution precludes participants from citing the views and opinions of a speaker who addresses governmental policy/program issues (even if he/she is not identified by name) when questioning subsequent speakers

7 Ground Rules Smoke Free Workplace Photography Security – All APEX participants must hold a SECRET clearance or above (use CAC card for Pentagon entrance) Out of consideration for others, we ask that Blackberries, Laptops, PDA’s and cell phones be turned off during presentations

8 Dress Code WEEK 1 Business Attire for the Pentagon and the day we visit NDU/State (March 6, 8, 9) – NOTE: There will be a group photo opportunity on the 6th Business Casual attire for Key Bridge Marriott days (March 7, 10) WEEK 2 Business Casual Pack for active participation Comfortable shoes

10 Sign-up for speaker introductions for Week 1 and Week 2 Responsibilities: –Based on speaker biography, give a brief introduction –Let the speaker know that you will serve as timekeeper –Give speaker an APEX coin at the conclusion of the presentation and thank them for speaking to the group –Write a short, handwritten thank you note – staff will provide note card and will then mail thank you notes to the speakers Speaker Introductions, Presentation of Coins and Thank You Notes

12 Meals & Breaks – Week 1 Breakfast coupons are provided for use in the hotel restaurant daily from Monday through Friday Lunch  Lunch coupons are provided to use in the hotel restaurant for Tuesday and Friday  Lunch will be provided at the Pentagon on Monday and Thursday  Lunch will be provided at the State Department on Wednesday Dinner  Tonight and Tuesday in the View Ballroom atop the Key Bridge Marriott  Monday, Wednesday and Thursday provided in an adjacent room  Friday on your own

13 Week 1 Agenda

14 Monday 3/6 and Thursday 3/9 at the Pentagon –Metro to and from Rosslyn Station –Metro cards provided at registration table –Please use your CAC card for entrance to Pentagon Tuesday 3/7 and Friday 3/10 at the Key Bridge Marriott Wednesday 3/8 at National Defense University (NDU), United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the State Department –A chartered bus will pick us up at the hotel –Meet in the lobby at 7:15 am –Departure time of 7:30 am Week 1 Transportation

15 Bus transportation to Andrews AFB on Saturday will leave hotel at approximately 11:00 am Transportation while on travel –Bus transportation will be provided (please leave first row at the front open for staff) –MILAIR will provide transportation from city to city (flights will be announced to you as they are confirmed) Transportation on the last day –MILAIR flight back to Andrews AFB with bus transportation to Reagan National Airport –Transportation will be provided to those with flights out of Norfolk or Newport News Week 2 Transportation

16 Meals & Breaks – Week 2 APEX Staff will pay the cost of any group meals and provide an itemized receipt at the end of the week 2 breakfasts 6 lunches 1 dinner Please be prepared to pay by cash or check on Friday the 17 th Estimated total: $100 You are responsible for meals on your own 4 breakfasts 5 dinners

17 Participant Introductions Please briefly share the following:  Your name, title and organization  Your expectations of what you hope to get out of this class  A personal tidbit (either a hobby, a favorite place to visit, or something about your family)
